The superhero genre remains extremely popular, with several interconnected universes vying for dominance at the box office. Although the Marvel Cinematic Universe, available on Disney+, is still thriving, it appears that Sony’s Spider-Man universe may be facing difficulties without its main character. Recently unveiled concept art for Kraven the Hunter hinted at a link with Venom, which could have eased my fear of missing out on Spider-Man-related content.
Kraven The Hunter flopped at the box office, continuing the legacy of other Sony titles like Morbius and the infamous Madame Web movie (which is available to stream with a Netflix subscription). Part of the reason for this box office performance could be a lack of fan interest, since the movies haven’t crossover over with each other or (more importantly) Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. But it turns out that Kraven could have included a tie to Venom, with fan art on Instagram showing a scrapped idea. Check it out below:

Indeed, it seems my thoughts are whirling. I’m not entirely sure how Kraven The Hunter could have introduced symbiotes into the plot, but it’s likely that audiences would have been excited to witness Sony’s interconnected movie universe finally coming together. Sadly, this concept was abandoned in Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s comic book film.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when I consider the current state of Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs like Venom, Madame Web, Morbius, and Kraven. Unlike Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, these characters don’t seem to share the same custody agreement with Marvel Studios, which means Peter Parker remains a peripheral figure in these films. This lack of crossover makes each Sony release feel somewhat detached from the larger shared universe that Marvel movies are known for, making them less compulsory viewing compared to upcoming Marvel films that could shape the future of this expansive universe.
The trailers for “Kraven the Hunter” highlighted the intense, R-rated action and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s impressive physique as the main character. However, despite the battles appearing brutal and grandiose, they were unable to draw audiences to the cinema. Consequently, this high-profile film only managed to earn $59.4 million globally against a production budget of approximately $110–130 million.
In my opinion, while many of the Sony Spider-verse films didn’t resonate with audiences at the box office, Tom Hardy’s Venom managed to captivate viewers unlike any other. If Kraven the Hunter had incorporated elements from the Tom Hardy franchise, it might have drawn in more moviegoers to witness Kraven’s solo adventure on the big screen.
Considering the poor performance of Kraven at the box office, it makes one ponder if Sony might abandon their shared universe concept entirely… or perhaps the Venom franchise may be drawing to a close. We can only speculate about the future villains in Tom Holland’s Spider-Man 4 for now.
You can watch Kraven the Hunter starting on January 14th on Video On Demand. In the meantime, take a look at the scheduled release dates for movies in 2025.
