Dick Wolf’s ‘On Call’ is Dominating the Prime Video Streaming Chart

Dick Wolf’s latest police procedural, titled “On Call,” made its debut on Prime Video and has quickly climbed to the top of their Top 10 list. At this moment, it holds the number one spot. The show was jointly created by Tim Walsh (known for Chicago P.D.) and Elliot Wolf (from Law & Order: Criminal Justice System), and marks a first for the legendary producer in terms of straight-to-streaming projects.

In “On Call,” we delve into the lives of experienced Officer Traci Harmon, played by Troian Bellisario (known for Pretty Little Liars), and newcomer Officer Alex Diaz, portrayed by Brandon Larracuente (The Good Doctor). They handle emergency calls in Long Beach, California. The series is made with a raw, authentic feel, utilizing handheld cameras as well as body cam footage to create an immersive experience. At times, it seems more like a documentary than a typical police drama.

I’m thrilled to round out the exceptional cast with the talented Lori Loughlin from Full House playing Lieutenant Bishop, Rich Ting from Squid Game bringing his acting prowess as Sergeant Tyson Koyama, and the consistently amazing Eriq La Salle from ER as Sergeant Lasman. Notably, La Salle has been a dedicated producer at Wolf Entertainment for several years, serving as Executive Producer on Chicago P.D. and On Call, where he also directs his own episodes.

Initially gracing IMDb TV screens, then finding a home on FreeVee, the series eventually caught the eye of Prime Video. What sets it apart is that it marks Wolf Entertainment’s debut in the realm of 30-minute shows, having previously dedicated over three decades to crafting hour-long dramas. This genre, typically extended beyond the 60-minute mark, is refreshingly compact in this instance.

‘On Call’ is a Heart-Pounding and Addictive Crime Show

The 8-episode series, titled “On Call,” weaves its story around the dynamic duo of veteran Harmon and newcomer Diaz. Their relationship serves as the backbone, but the action unfolds primarily in and around Long Beach. The ‘cinéma vérité’ approach immerses viewers directly into the show, creating a sense of suspense and intensity. The death of a fellow officer adds layers of tension and drama to the narrative, particularly as Harmon and Diaz grapple with this loss.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that among the current crop of 30-minute crime dramas on air, few can match the inventiveness of this series. To put it simply, you might struggle to find a more addictive half-hour crime show for binge-watching right now!

To make matters even more complex, Harmon is grappling with departmental politics, office rumors, and old personal issues. Despite the eight 30-minute episodes packed with content, the show doesn’t become overwhelmed. The emergency calls span a wide spectrum, from domestic conflicts to full-blown gang wars and drug kingpins.

The feedback on Rotten Tomatoes is divided among critics, scoring just 58%, but it’s adored by audiences, boasting an impressive rating of 91%. On IMDb, it has earned a solid 7.7 out of 10, demonstrating its popularity with viewers.

Is there a chance for another season of “On Call”? The first season wrapped up quite decisively, but it has set up several possibilities for future plots. Ever since its premiere on January 9, 2025, the series has been at the top of the streaming charts. If it manages to remain in the Top 10, Amazon Prime Video might just commission a second season. Walsh shared with TV Insider that they are optimistic about getting a Season 2, as they’ve left some stories untold.
