Ke Huy Quan, who’s experiencing a remarkable comeback in his acting career, has been shining brightly after his award-winning portrayal in the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once. Following his Academy Award win for Best Supporting Actor, Quan has since landed roles in shows on Disney+ like American Born Chinese, and the second season of Loki. He’s also set to appear in films such as Kung Fu Panda 4, The Electric State directed by the Russo Brothers for Netflix. Yet, it was his first leading role in the upcoming movie Love Hurts that initially gave him pause — until a renowned director encouraged him to stop overthinking and simply accept the part.
According to a recent chat with Empire Magazine, the actor shared an interesting experience where director Steven Spielberg was instrumental in boosting his confidence as a leading man. During their first collaboration, Spielberg showed great care and understanding towards the actor, even allowing him to propose the film idea before giving his approval. In his own words:
At a gathering with Steven Spielberg, he inquired, “Hey Ke, how are you feeling today?” To which I replied, “Steven, I haven’t been doing too great.” The overwhelming affection and encouragement I received throughout the award season had left me anxious about not living up to expectations for whatever was next. However, Steven was understanding. He invited me out for lunch. During our meal, I shared my project idea with him and pitched it to him. His response? “Ke, that sounds fantastic. Go ahead and do it.
‘Love Hurts’ Will Finally Put the Spotlight on Ke Huy Quan
In a notable career milestone, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom marked Ke Huy Quan’s initial foray onto the silver screen, where he captivated audiences as Short Round. It’s heartwarming to see that even after all these years, Steven Spielberg continues to champion Quan, urging him into the limelight. The debut trailer for Love Hurts introduces an atypical action hero in Quan’s character, Marvin Gable – a prosperous real estate agent grappling with his past as an assassin.
In the same “Empire” article, Quan underscored the surprising aspect of the movie. He elaborated on this by sharing his perspective on the role, which he viewed differently following the creative team’s conviction that he was perfectly suited for it.
Originally, I didn’t believe someone resembling me could take on this role. Fortunately, they persisted in giving me another chance. For a third time, I was invited. Upon entering, I found intricate slides with me as the central figure. That was when my perspective shifted. ‘Ah, they’re aiming to craft a fresh type of action hero – not the traditional one we’ve been accustomed to for years, but something innovative.’
2025 movie calendar is jam-packed with exciting titles like “Love Hurts”, “Captain America: Brave New World”, and the chilling “Heart Eyes”. The new year promises to be a golden era for cinema, and the action comedy starring Ke Huy Quan could potentially steal the show in early 2025. Here’s hoping that more viewers recognize his talent as a leading man, much like Steven Spielberg does.
