Marvel Rivals: What will Get Console Players Banned?

In every multiplayer online game, there’s usually the potential for players to exploit the rules through methods like aim assistance or by leveraging technology to gain an unfair edge.

A month after launch, the developers of Marvel Rivals found certain behaviors within the game that appeared to be unethical, like playing on a console with a keyboard and mouse.

Using Keyboard and Mouse on Console for Marvel Rivals

According to Marvel Rivals’ latest update, employing a keyboard and mouse on your gaming console may lead to either a short-term or long-term ban from the game. In simpler terms, using these peripherals might get you temporarily or permanently kicked out of the game.

Keyboard and mouse adapters refer to tools that either through software or hardware replicate controller input using a keyboard and mouse. These tools can provide an unbalanced advantage in competitive gaming scenarios, such as leveraging extreme sensitivity and aim-assist functions.

In the game, there are tools right now that allow developers to identify users who employ specific setup methods. If you’re familiar with first-person shooters on both PC and consoles, you know there’s a significant control difference between keyboard/mouse setups, especially regarding precision and aim assistance on console platforms. This advantage can greatly benefit even inexperienced players on console systems.

Among the devices that can aid in setting up as suggested by NetEase are the XIM, Cronus Zen, Titan Two, KayMander, and Brook Sniper series, along with any other tools designed to emulate a mouse functioning like a controller. Such devices will be categorized as adapters.

Consequences for individuals using keyboard and mouse adapters could range from short-term or long-term suspension of accounts, deletion from leaderboards, or other appropriate penalties based on the situation.

What’s Been Fixed So Far?

In the list of improvements made by NetEase for Marvel Rivals since its release, addressing controller/mouse/keyboard setups is just one aspect. For instance, during Season 1 of the game, certain mods were deactivated, and using them within the game could potentially lead to a temporary ban.

It’s normal for certain characters to receive adjustments like buffs and nerfs as more heroes are added to the game. This is because each new hero can unexpectedly alter the balance, and it’s something the developers have to manage over time.

In a similar vein to Overwatch, Rivals has received calls to introduce a role-based queue system aimed at delivering fairer games for players. However, the developers have consistently refused to implement this feature in their hero shooter game. At most, fans are urging them to pause creating Duelists characters temporarily and focus on introducing more Vanguards and Strategists (characters that appear to be underplayed by gamers).

As a gamer, I find that Rivals has a significant advantage because Overwatch has already laid much groundwork. All I need to do is study how Blizzard manages their hero shooter and brainstorm ways to enhance it for my own game. Role queue, admittedly, leads to more balanced teams, but it does mean sacrificing some player freedom in terms of who they can choose to play.

Marvel Rivals is now available for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5.
