This film depicts a teenage lad from Cork, Ireland, traversing the murky secrets of his family history while trying to find his niche in life. In the Generation Kplus area, the opening film “The Nature of Invisible Things” delves into the solidarity displayed by a community towards two girls as they experience goodbyes and fresh starts.
The Generation 14plus competition launches with the movie “Christy,” directed by Brendan Canty. It tells the story of a teenager from Cork, Ireland, who’s trying to find his way in life amidst the mysteries of his family’s history. In the Generation Kplus section, the opening film “The Nature of Invisible Things” focuses on how a community supports two girls during their times of saying goodbye and new beginnings.
The roster showcases “Seaside Serendipity” by Satoko Yokohama, an episodic movie based on an unnamed Japanese island, seamlessly combining magical realism with the ordinary, exploring the connection between art and life. Additionally, “Wrong Husband” by Zacharias Kunuk is included, offering a journey into a mystical Canadian Arctic landscape where human and spiritual realms intertwine in a tale of young love. The heartfelt “Sunshine,” helmed by Antoinette Jadaone, chronicles the self-discovery voyage of a young girl, while in “Paternal Leave,” Alissa Jung dives into a teenager’s mission to discover her unknown father, ultimately leading to personal insights.
Three documentaries offer distinctive insights into contemporary issues. “Circusboy,” helmed by Anna Koch and Julia Lemke, provides a peek into the circus realm from a young boy’s perspective, using tales passed down by his great-grandfather. “Playtime,” directed by Lucia Murat, delivers a powerful storyline that interweaves themes of violence, racism, and misogyny as endured by predominantly Black students in Rio de Janeiro schools. Lastly, Robin Petré’s “Only on Earth” examines the intricate bond between humanity and nature, showcasing breathtaking visuals of horses at risk due to forest fires.
The Generation 2025 initiative encompasses various animated films as well. Notably, renowned French animator Michel Gondry (known for “The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “The Science of Sleep”) will present his latest stop-motion film, titled “Maya, Give Me a Title“, which he describes as a heartfelt stop-motion letter to his daughter Maya, at Berlin. Additionally, the omnibus feature “Tales from the Magic Garden“, another stop-motion production, delves into three children employing their imagination to cope with sorrow. The Chinese animated feature “A Story about Fire“, helmed by director Li Wenyu, retells the legend of Ran Bi Wa, a monkey raised among humans, who embarks on a journey to the Sacred Mountain to seize fire for humanity. Lastly, in a special screening, “Underage“, directed by Caru Alves de Souza, delves into themes of youth and resistance against authority figures, using an unnaturalistic perspective to ponder upon justice and systemic injustice.
