For quite some time now, I’ve been an avid fan of Daredevil. My first foray into the world of comics was with the initial 10 issues of the original Daredevil series from the Silver Age. Later on, after finishing college, I delved into Mark Waid’s narrative arc featuring the character. When the Netflix Daredevil series debuted in 2015, I revisited older storylines and kept up with the ongoing Daredevil comics for a while. With the release of the Daredevil: Born Again trailer, it seems that the upcoming Marvel TV show will likely adapt one of my all-time favorite Matt Murdock tales.
The Storyline Daredevil Born: Again Seems To Be Pulling From
In a preliminary scene, the character Wilson Fisk, portrayed by Vincent D’Onofrio, also known as Kingpin, queries Charlie Cox’s Matt about his decision to abandon his vigilante role. Matt replies cryptically, “A line was crossed.” Despite not elaborating further, Wilson expresses difficulty accepting Matt’s violent past. Since Matt has always used violence in the fight against crime, both outside and inside the courtroom as Daredevil, it remains unclear what specific act could have driven him to retire his mask. One plausible explanation is that he took a life, an act he had explicitly vowed not to commit during the original Daredevil series on television.
For the moment, let’s consider this possibility: I don’t believe Matt intentionally took a life; it’s unlike him to harm Wilson Fisk given their history in Daredevil Season 3 finale. Instead, I suspect this was an unfortunate accident. This scenario makes me hopeful that the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again will draw from a significant plot point in Chip Zdarsky’s comic book series. In the initial phase of Daredevil’s printed storyline, Matt unwittingly caused a death, and he felt so remorseful that he temporarily retired as a superhero and even agreed to serve prison time, all while keeping his true identity concealed.
More Evidence That Supports My Zdarsky Theory
It’s important to acknowledge that the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again” is unlikely to delve extensively into Chip Zdarsky’s run, given its unique take on the Mayor Fisk storyline hinted in the “Echo” finale, which was previously explored during Charles Soule’s tenure. However, I should mention that alongside my assumptions, there’s also the verified fact that Jeremy Earl is portraying Cole North, a NYPD officer working for Kingpin’s Anti-Vigilante Task Force. In the comics, Cole first appeared during Zdarsky’s run as the detective who probed into Daredevil’s murder case, and later was tasked with capturing Spider-Man when Fisk aimed to eliminate all vigilantes from New York City.
Could it be that Daredevil: Born Again might bring back some unexpected characters from the Marvel shows on Netflix? A studio head’s comments seem to suggest this possibility.
I’m Excited about the recent developments Charlie Cox shared regarding darker aspects of Daredevil, but it leaves me puzzled as to why Krysten Ritter hasn’t been contacted for her input yet.
As the story of “Daredevil: Born Again” unfolds, we might witness Jeremy Earl’s character Cole persistently pursuing Daredevil, with the aim of apprehending him for a homicide that has yet to be identified. If Charlie Cox’s Matt were to retire permanently from his superhero role, he would no longer have to fear law enforcement chasing after him. However, making “Born Again” an uninteresting tale would be counterproductive, so the series is likely to develop in such a way that Matt must once again don the mask, use his billy club, and fight crime.
So, here’s what we can expect: Wilson Fisk, having been elected as the mayor of New York City, seems to have amassed more power than ever before, which isn’t exactly good news. We also see the return of Jon Berthal’s character, Benjamin Poindexter, who is set to become Bullseye. Furthermore, the serial killer artist Muse will be causing trouble as well. It’s even possible that Matt might have an extended confrontation with Frank Castle, better known as The Punisher. And let’s not forget the intense interaction between these two in the trailer. Quite a lot going on, wouldn’t you say?
I Hope Daredevil: Born Again Doesn’t Ignore The Prison Plot Point
It seems clear that with the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again” spanning nine episodes, it’s safe to say Matt Murdock will have plenty to deal with in New York City for that duration. If the series does draw from Chip Zdarsky’s run, I’m hoping this season may pave the way for, or even culminate in, a scenario where Matt finds himself behind bars.
Interestingly, “Born Again” was initially given an 18-episode order, with the intention that it would be shown in one season. However, those final nine episodes will now constitute Season 2, which is set to start filming later this year.
If Wilson Fisk establishes an anti-vigilante task force and Matt Murdock, Daredevil, may have unintentionally taken a life, these circumstances seem sufficient for our protagonist’s arrest. This would make for an engaging Season 1 finale, with the character finding himself imprisoned, surrounded by individuals he once helped convict, all while maintaining his disguise to keep his civilian identity concealed. The complexity of Matt’s refusal to take more lives and Fisk’s political power in New York City ensure that this narrative twist won’t feel repetitive of Frank Castle’s imprisonment in Daredevil Season 2.
With “Daredevil: Born Again” set to debut on March 4, 2025, it won’t be long before my theories are either proven right or disproven. Regardless of the outcome, I strongly suggest that anyone who enjoys Daredevil comics should check out Chip Zdarsky’s work. You can do this by purchasing the physical volumes or reading the issues on Marvel Unlimited.
