Studio Loes Gives Classical Berlin Apartment Subtle Makeover

This compact apartment located in Berlin was refurbished by Studio Loes, blending classic Altbau elements with modern touches.

As a devoted admirer, I’d like to share my appreciation for the studio, a creative powerhouse established by Gonzalo Lizama, Onur Özdemir, and Lukas Specks. Their unique approach involves minimal interference in their projects, a philosophy they proudly uphold. They have a deep respect for the existing space, referring to it as their “leftovers.” This term reflects their dedication to preserving the original charm of each project.

In a style common to historic buildings in Berlin, this apartment showcases lofty ceilings and expansive windows, flooding it with ample sunlight. The space features decorative plaster accents that harmoniously blend with contemporary appliances and furnishings.

Prior to renovation, the layout of the previous apartment featured some unusual, or unique, recesses in specific spots which resulted in unused spaces.

In this way, they intelligently planned their layout to make the most of the available room. For instance, in the bathroom, they installed a bespoke basin with a subtle color reminiscent of butter, which gradually slopes to hide a washing machine while serving as the sink, toilet, and cabinet all in one.

As a gamer, my favorite spot is a music haven nestled right beside the main hangout zone. It serves as an audiophile’s paradise, where I can immerse myself in the owners’ extensive vinyl collection and mix tracks using their top-notch DJ gear. To make it even more personalized, they crafted custom shelving that seamlessly integrates the speakers into the design, creating a harmonious blend of sound and style.

Custom-made furniture was tailored for the bedroom, incorporating a bed that appears to be an integral part of the room, providing storage solutions while also showcasing integrated wall lamps in a bold red hue, designed by Andre Ricard and manufactured by Santa & Cole. The architects remarked that these lamps add a pop of color to the space and offer soft, pleasant illumination.

In the kitchen area, a contemporary feel is added by the sleek cobalt-blue linoleum flooring, while it harmoniously matches the stainless steel cabinetry. Near the window, you’ll find a dining setup featuring an unrefined aluminum table and stools.
