Tomorrow, January 18th, upon the resumption of operations for “The Haunted Mansion“, marking its first appearance in its traditional form since August 2023 at Disneyland, guests will be thrilled to experience this renowned ride once more. The delay, owing to renovations on the Haunted Mansion queue outside the building, has heightened anticipation for this reopening. However, upon visiting, you’ll notice that the mansion hasn’t quite returned to its original appearance.
Walt Disney Imagineering is utilizing an opportunity to modernize a significant scene in the Haunted Mansion. Besides enhancing the technology, they’ve also rewritten the narrative that unfolds. However, more significant changes for the mansion might be on the horizon.
The Haunted Mansion’s Bride Uses New Technology To Tell An Old Story
In my perspective, one of the iconic figures in Disney’s Haunted Mansion is none other than ‘The Bride’. If you’ve ever ventured into the attic of this spooky mansion, you’d notice a lady in a wedding gown standing quietly in a corner. Imagineer Kim Irvine, who has a special bond with the Haunted Mansion, shares that the revamped mansion will revert to an earlier version of this character compared to what was there before. She elaborated…
In our new narrative, we’re returning to focus on the bridal figure who once stood forlornly in the attic, a forgotten relic among the misplaced treasures. The attic stories we initially shared hinted at this, and now we wish to delve deeper into that aspect. Despite having many husbands from years past, she remains unaware of their whereabouts as they seemingly vanished without a trace.
In the scene before, the Bride appeared to be a significantly more ominous figure. As riders drew near, they noticed numerous wedding photographs of the same woman with different spouses. However, each time their faces would mysteriously disappear, suggesting that this “Bride” was actually a serial killer known as the Black Widow, having claimed multiple husbands’ lives.
The newlywed woman is joined by fresh paintings, yet in these depictions, the grooms are completely absent, not merely their faces – a hint suggesting that they have vanished altogether, though the cause remains unexplained.
In a modern twist on the classic tale, advanced technology has breathed new life into the scene. The appearance of the Ghost Bride has undergone a significant transformation. Instead of standing mournfully in a corner, she now floats aimlessly, expressing her sorrow over her loss.
It’s intriguing that the candelabra the Bride carries resembles the one that mysteriously floats on its own earlier in the attraction. Moreover, this same candelabra appears in the later graveyard scene, suggesting that the Bride may be traversing the entire mansion.
The Iconic Hanging Man May Still Be Replaced Down The Road
As a devoted cinema-goer, I’m thrilled to share that the iconic Hitchhiking Ghosts segment of the Haunted Mansion seems to have undergone some refreshing updates! The specifics are being tightly guarded secrets until the attraction reopens, but Kim Irvine has hinted at potential changes in another part of the Mansion for a future transformation.
From the outset, The Haunted Mansion offers a unique mix of fear and laughter, with its most chilling moment arguably occurring right at the start. The spectral narrator, who guides your journey, shares an intriguing detail: he managed to break free from the well-known stretching chamber by suspending himself from the ceiling rafters.
Previously, there were whispers that the depiction might be swapped out. Kim Irvine clarified to The Times that the controversial image, which appears to show suicide, could prove distressing in today’s society. Although the depiction hasn’t been altered as of now, it is being reconsidered. Irvine elaborated…
We’re still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally … One thing at a time.
To be honest, I’m torn about this. I get why some might find this inappropriate in today’s context, but on a personal level, it doesn’t strike me that way. As a result, I’m having a hard time making a definitive judgment.
The most frightening moment of the ride occurs when the hanged man is unveiled, following a time when guests are completely enshrouded in darkness – arguably the scariest experience within Disneyland. It’s hard to imagine replacing it with something equally spine-tingling; removing it might disrupt the delicate equilibrium of the ride. This could be what Irvine was hinting at as structural difficulties. Altering this scene could necessitate alterations throughout the ride.
It’s becoming increasingly evident that the Haunted Mansion, just like any other attraction at Disneyland, is constantly evolving and never fully complete.
