Nelly Defends His Upcoming Performance at Trump Inaugural Ball: “This Isn’t Politics”

Over the weekend, I stood firm with my choice to take the stage at the Inaugural Ball for the new president. I reasoned that it’s not about politics on the campaign trail; instead, it’s an opportunity to celebrate our nation’s transition of power.

During his livestream chat with Willie D, the rapper made it clear that he’s not involved in politics. He also emphasized that he doesn’t encourage anyone on who they should or shouldn’t vote for.

This week, the lineup of artists scheduled for Trump’s inauguration events has faced criticism, with many fans expressing disapproval towards singers who accepted the invitation. Notable performers include Carrie Underwood, Gavin DeGraw, Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as others. Nelly is slated to perform at the Liberty Inaugural Ball, and was originally billed as a “surprise musical guest” along with Jason Aldean and the Village People.

Nelly stated on Saturday, “I’m not urging you to vote for a specific candidate, but I encourage you to make an informed decision based on what benefits you and those you care about most. Frankly, there are many things I don’t know much about. However, I want to emphasize that I respect the office itself. Politics might be over for me, as he is now our president – the commander-in-chief of a country I deeply admire, which I believe is the best in the world.

Additionally, Nelly shared his childhood memories from a military base in Texas, expressing gratitude towards his family members who served in the U.S. military. “If they can sacrifice their lives for the country, then I can put on a show,” he stated. “It’s an honor for me to entertain the President of the United States, whether it’s this one or the next.

Nate Dogg, the “Hot in Herre” singer, expressed his dissatisfaction over fan criticism regarding his decision to perform. “Had President Biden invited me to perform, I would have performed. If Vice President Kamala Harris had won and asked for my performance, I would have obliged…I wasn’t aware that you were expecting me to align with the candidate you voted for. I didn’t realize that I needed to share your political views. If you’ve been a fan of mine, this shouldn’t even be a debatable issue.

When Willie D. queried the musician about his views on supporting Trump, Nelly replied: “I back the President of the U.S., no matter who’s in charge. Regardless, I hold the office in high esteem.” During the same chat, he added: “Performing for someone and casting a vote for them are two distinct actions.

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to Nelly’s reps for further comment.
