Sequels for movies that are released in theaters often become a foregone conclusion if they achieve blockbuster status. However, sequels aren’t as guaranteed when it comes to streaming releases. For instance, if a film featuring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot had been a box office phenomenon, you might expect a sequel by now, but the follow-up to “Red Notice” that we’ve heard is in discussion remains uncertain. Now, we have a clearer understanding of why this might be the case.
In 2021, Red Notice held the record as Netflix’s most-watched film and, based on a recent Bloomberg report, it still maintains that position. It’s not hard to understand why. The movie boasted the largest cast of any Netflix production at the time, and it had a big-budget action-comedy feel that was comparable to movies we might have seen in theaters. Interestingly, it appears that the budget allocated for the Red Notice cast may be the reason behind the delay in producing Red Notice 2.
Red Notice’s Three Stars Made A Lot Of Money
Based on a Bloomberg report, the production costs for “Red Notice” are estimated to have been approximately $200 million. A significant portion, about $80 million, went towards paying the actors Johnson, Reynolds, and Gadot. This high salary expense is believed to be a significant hurdle in the making of “Red Notice 2”. If we consider that similar compensation might be required for a sequel, the film’s budget could potentially reach $250 million.
As a backer, if Red Notice were premiering in cinemas and projected to rake in $750 million at the box office, that budget could potentially be an acceptable expense for a studio. However, with the markedly distinct economics of streaming, the numbers don’t align quite as smoothly.
How Red Notice 2 Could Still Happen
In 2022, it was mentioned that Netflix might film sequels to “Red Notice” consecutively. So far, no such development has occurred (as far as we know), but it’s plausible this idea could help lower production costs. Filming multiple movies at once tends to be more affordable than producing them individually, primarily because actors might agree to reduced rates if they’re effectively working on a single extended project instead of two separate ones.
There are discussions about streamers adopting a payment system for talent that’s similar to how actors in movies are compensated, with the potential for bigger earnings if the content becomes popular. This method is common, as some actors receive lower initial payments but can earn more through additional payments if the project turns out to be successful. Top-tier talents may make even more in this manner, like Tom Cruise who saw a significant payday when Top Gun: Maverick was a blockbuster success. This system allows studios to save money on productions that don’t turn a profit.
It appears that although critics weren’t particularly fond of “Red Notice”, the public seemed to enjoy it, suggesting a high demand for a follow-up. However, whether or not a sequel will be produced is still uncertain.
