Fernanda Torres‘ mom must be so proud.
On Thursday, the lead actress of Walter Salles’ period film “I’m Still Here” followed in the footsteps of her mother Fernanda Montenegro by being nominated as the second Brazilian ever by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for Best Actress. (Notably, Ms. Montenegro had been nominated back in 1999 for “Central Station,” but lost to Gwyneth Paltrow for “Shakespeare in Love.”)
Thursday saw the star of Walter Salles’ film “I’m Still Here” echoing her mother Fernanda Montenegro’s 1999 nomination (for “Central Station”) by becoming one of only two Brazilians to be recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in the Best Actress category. (It was Ms. Montenegro who had been nominated that year, but she ultimately lost out to Gwyneth Paltrow for “Shakespeare in Love.”)
Torres is competing against Emilia Pérez, Karla Sofía Gascón (from ‘Karla’), Cynthia Erivo (‘Wicked’s Cynthia), Mikey Madison (‘Anora’s Mikey’), and Demi Moore (‘The Substance’s Demi’) in the category. This month, the 59-year-old took the unexpected Golden Globe for best actress (drama category) over notable figures like Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Tilda Swinton, Pamela Anderson, and Kate Winslet.

She’s not heavily favored to win an Oscar either, but her portrayal of Eunice Paiva – the wife who became an activist after her politician husband vanished during Brazil’s military rule – has received universal acclaim. According to The Hollywood Reporter, her acting as Paiva was particularly commendable, showcasing a “woman of quiet strength and resistance” with “extraordinary grace and dignity amid emotional hardship.
Torres dedicated her Golden Globe award to her mother, and if she wins an Oscar on March 2nd, you can bet that mom Fernanda, who is 95 years old, will be acknowledged once more. In a touching cinematic coincidence, Fernanda Montenegro appeared in the movie “I’m Still Here” as Eunice Paiva in the film’s closing scenes. At this point, Eunice was mostly nonverbal and had been significantly affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
In addition to being nominated for Best Actress, the film “I’m Still Here” is also contending for Best Picture and has been recognized in the category of Best International Feature Film.
But whatever happens at the 97th Academy Awards, Fernanda Torres has already made history.
