2025’s Oscar nominees have been unveiled, with 13 individuals experiencing their first nomination among them. Notable newcomers include Ariana Grande, Kieran Culkin, Demi Moore, Zoe Saldaña, Sebastian Stan, and Karla Sofía Gascón.
Emilia Pérez’s performance as Rita Mora Castro earned her a best supporting actress nomination, while she was also recognized for her lead role in Emilia Pérez, garnering a nomination for Gascón in the best actress category. Notably, this is Gascón’s first time being nominated for an Oscar and marks a historic moment as they are the first openly transgender acting nominee. The film, helmed by Jacques Audiard, dominated the Oscar nominations with a total of 13 nods.
Stan received his initial Oscar nomination in the best actor category for his performance as President Donald Trump on The Apprentice. Additionally, Jeremy Strong was nominated for best supporting actor for his role as Roy Cohn.
Following her recent victory at the Golden Globes, Demi Moore has been nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role category for her portrayal of Elisabeth Sparkle in Coralie Fargeat’s movie titled The Substance. This film garnered a total of five nominations for the Oscars.
Almost half of the nominees for Best Supporting Actress were making their first appearance on the list. Joining Saldaña, Grande was also nominated for her role as Glinda in Universal’s live-action adaptation of Wicked, which received a total of nine other nominations. In this category, Isabella Rossellini gained a nomination for her performance as Sister Agnes in Conclave, and Monica Barbaro earned a mention for her portrayal of Joan Baez in A Complete Unknown, directed by James Mangold.
In the category of Best Supporting Actor, there were an equal number of first-time nominees. Kieran Culkin received his inaugural Oscar nod for his performance as Benji Kaplan in “A Real Pain“, and Guy Pearce was recognized for his role as Harrison Lee Van Buren Sr. in “The Brutalist“. Similarly, Richard Strong was nominated for portraying Roy Cohn in “The Apprentice“, while Yura Borisov gained a nomination for his work in “Anora“.
Mikey Madison and Borisov received their initial Oscar nominations for the film “Anora“. Madison is nominated in the category of best leading actress for her portrayal of Ani, while Borisov is recognized as best supporting actor for his character Igor. Interestingly, Borisov made history with this nomination as he became the first Russian actor to be nominated for an Oscar since 1977. Directed by Sean Baker, “Anora” garnered a total of six nominations.
As a devoted admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve treaded the path paved by my esteemed mother, Fernanda Montenegro, by being the second Brazilian ever nominated in the Best Actress category for my role as Eunice Paiva in the captivating film “I’m Still Here“. Directed by Walter Salles, this masterpiece garnered us two more well-deserved nominations.
