The series “Downton Abbey,” initially aired over a decade ago, appears to have expanded into an extensive franchise. Despite its popularity in both the UK and US, its creators assure us that “Downton Abbey 3” will mark the conclusion of this historical drama, offering insights into various families and social classes during the turn of the 20th century.
On the set, there was a mix of sweetness and sadness since it was the final filming for Downton Abbey 3, which releases on September 12, 2025. Michelle Dockery, who has played Lady Mary Crawley from the beginning, shared her thoughts about returning to the franchise with MovieWeb. “To be honest,” Dockery said, “it was amazing for us to make one film. Now, looking back and realizing we’ve done a series and three movies is just incredible – something none of us could have imagined.
Returning to this place felt just as comfortable as ever, similar to reuniting with family. The closeness among us and the wonderful ambiance are truly unique. In most careers, one rarely gets the chance to revisit something so often. However, knowing it was my final time made the experience even more precious, making me cherish every moment that I could. It’s like a second home for me. And though it may end, its impact will last forever.
Who Else Is Returning for ‘Downton Abbey 3?’
Michelle Dockery is among several familiar characters making a comeback in the popular series. Alongside her, Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyllis Logan, Robert James-Collier, Paul Giamatti, Allen Leech, Penelope Wilton, and Joanne Froggatt will also return to their respective roles. Additionally, new cast members joining the franchise include Joely Richardson, Alessandro Nivola, Simon Russell Beale, and Arty Froushan.
Simon Curtis is gearing up for another directorial venture following the acclaim he received from his last movie, “Downton Abbey: A New Era“. This film was a pleasant surprise to many, receiving an impressive 86% approval rating from critics and a staggering 97% positive feedback from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Curtis is recognized primarily for his heartwarming films from the 2010s, such as “My Week with Marilyn” and “Goodbye Christopher Robin“, making him an ideal choice to steer this project, which was launched way back in early 2011.
Meanwhile, I’m thrilled to be part of the upcoming action-thriller “Flight Risk,” directed by none other than Mel Gibson! This nerve-wracking movie finds me as a U.S. Marshal trapped in a small aircraft with a hazardous prisoner (portrayed by Topher Grace) and a maniacal Mark Wahlberg. Catch it on the big screen starting January 24, 2025, courtesy of Lionsgate.
