Among my all-time favorite TV series is “The West Wing.” I’ll watch pretty much anything penned by Aaron Sorkin, but unfortunately, there isn’t anything on television today that resembles the quality of “The West Wing.” Although some say Netflix’s “The Diplomat” comes close, it just got even better since a second cast member from “The West Wing” joined for Season 3.
I haven’t watched “The Diplomat” yet, but every time I come across it, it adds another reason for me to give it a try. Given Netflix’s tendency to cancel shows, any series that makes it to Season 3 is definitely worth considering. Plus, since the show delves into politics and politicians, it shares some similarities with “The West Wing.” I’ve been a fan of Keri Russell ever since her days on the Mickey Mouse Club, and when they added Allison Janney in Season 2, I almost started watching.
However, now I’m out of excuses because Season 3 is bringing Bradley Whitford into the fold.
Bradley Whitford And Allison Janney Together Again Is Going To Be Glorious

You can stream The West Wing with a Max subscription and The Diplomat with a Netflix subscription.
Allison Janney took on the role of Vice President in Season 2 of “The Diplomat.” By the end of the season, she had climbed up the ranks to become the President. According to Deadline, when Season 3 resumes with the newly elected President, we’ll also meet her spouse, who will be portrayed by Bradley Whitford, a former cast member of “The West Wing.
Shows featuring Allison Janey and Bradley Whitford are guaranteed to catch my interest, but a series where they portray a married couple is bound to keep me hooked. Although their characters from “The West Wing,” Press Secretary C.J. Cregg and Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman, didn’t share any romance, their on-screen chemistry was electrifying. Therefore, I’m excited that they’re playing a couple in “The Diplomat,” which suggests that many of Whitford’s scenes will probably involve Janney, as it should be.
Whitford’s part tends to reoccur throughout the series, implying he might not play a pivotal role in this season’s narrative, but you can expect him to appear more frequently than for a fleeting scene or two.

Guess I’m Going To Start Watching The Diplomat Before Season 3 Arrives
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that “The Diplomat” was renewed for a third season way back in November! However, it seems the production team had already begun filming before the announcement. Alas, Netflix hasn’t pinned down an exact release date for Season 3 on their 2025 calendar yet. But here’s a fun fact: there was a 16-month gap between Seasons 1 and 2. If this pattern holds, we might be able to dive back into the world of “The Diplomat” during the first quarter of 2026!
It seems there’s not much left to delay watching “The Diplomat,” as I appear to be running short on reasons. Although I still hope that Aaron Sorkin’s hints about reviving “The West Wing” will eventually come true, until then, it looks like this might serve as a suitable alternative.
