Guess what? Brazil just 🙅♂️ said no to World Network’s – that’s Worldcoin, FYI – pay-for-data plan! They’re all like, “Hey, you can’t just offer people money to collect their biometric data, that’s 🤯 crazy!”
So, Brazil’s data protection folks, the Autoridade Nacional de Proteção de Dados, are all up in arms about this. They reckon that if you dangle some Worldcoin tokens (WLD) in front of someone, especially if they’re in a tough spot, it’s not really fair play. Consent should be 🎲 free and informed, not bought with crypto chump change.
Now, here’s the thing: World Network wants to make a universal digital ID and finance system using eye scans with their fancy Orb tech. It’s like they’re trying to be the 👑 king of biometric data, but Brazil’s not having it.
This whole shebang started back in 2019 with Sam Altman, the big cheese at OpenAI, and his Tools for Humanity crew. They’ve been spreading their wings, trying to make the world a more secure place for AI times. But Brazil’s like, “Nuh-uh, no 📴 token bribes for eyeballs!”
And get this: Brazil’s rules say consent needs to be super clear, specific, and not forced. Biometric data ain’t no joke, people!
On Jan. 25, Brazil put its foot down after looking into this since November 2024. They’re worried about how World Network handles all this personal info, especially since biometric data is like, permanent. Once it’s out there, it’s 💣 boom, gone forever.
World Network says they take privacy seriously, with all sorts of privacy measures. But that didn’t stop them from getting slapped around by regulators everywhere. Hong Kong, for one, thought they were way too invasive last year. The privacy folks there were like, “You guys are 🚀 shooting past the boundaries of our laws!”
Hong Kong wasn’t impressed with the lack of transparency or the fact that World Network didn’t bother to tell people in Chinese about their data rights. So, they told World Network to 🛑 stop all operations in Hong Kong by May 2024.
Germany, Spain, and Kenya also gave them the 🙅♀️ cold shoulder. But World Network keeps on truckin’, launching new stuff for their World App and Orb devices, despite all the 🚦 red lights.
