In a plot twist that would make any discworld dweller nod in appreciation, Starknet has decided to sprinkle some magic dust on its STRK token. Behold, the second coming of staking is nigh, and it’s set to enchant the second quarter of 2025!
After the initial fling with STRK staking, the band of merry developers behind this Ethereum layer-2 shenanigan have piped up with a juicy update. Phase 2 is coming, and it’s not just another ‘hold my beer’ moment.
On a day when the calendar said ‘Jan. 27’, Starknet let slip that STRK staking v2 is primed to make its grand entrance in Q2 2025. This follows the rather successful first phase, which was more than just a ‘hello world’ in the world of proof-of-stake layer-2 solutions.
In the first act, validators were treated like royalty for doing the basics, like running full nodes. Now, Starknet is upping the ante, giving validators a bit more ‘homework’ to beef up the network’s security and spread the decentralization love.
“Phase 1 was our ‘let’s see if this thing works’ moment. And lo, it did! We even got some nifty feedback. Now, it’s time to make validators earn their keep and show us their moves before they become the big cheeses in our consensus circle (hold your horses for Phase 3)” – Starknet, in a moment of clarity on X.
Staking v2 is bringing the ‘validator block attestation’ to the party, which is just a fancy way of saying validators will actually have to do stuff. And if early January’s whispers are to be believed, there might just be a little something-something about increasing commissions. Watch this space!
In the first round, over 150 million STRK tokens were happily staked, and the network blossomed to 100 validators. Over 60,000 eager beavers also hopped on the delegation bandwagon.
After v2, Starknet is cooking up a storm with block voting in phase 3. By phase 4, validators will be the big kids on the block, taking charge of the whole shebang – producing, attesting, and proving blocks. It’s going to be a wild ride!
