Bill Murray was a consistent presence in Hollywood from the late ’70s until the ’90s, leaving behind a treasure trove of amusing movie quotes featuring “Murray” charm. He also made a notable comeback to Saturday Night Live, one of many original stars who graced the late-night series. Despite his numerous successes during that period, Murray has appeared in fewer films over the last few decades. He acknowledged that some of this reduction was due to his own leisurely decisions and the harsh criticism he received in 2022. However, he is now seeking out new roles and characters once more.
Actor Bill Murray, known for “Groundhog Day,” discussed a slow phase in his career during an interview with critic Elvis Mitchell at Sundance Film Festival (as reported by Variety). When asked about gaps in his work history, the 74-year-old admitted that he’s simply been out of the acting game and currently doesn’t have any representation. Regarding Hollywood, Murray stated:
Recently, I’ve found myself less active, perhaps more leisurely paced. Without a representative, I’ve slipped off the radar when it comes to being considered for major film productions.
It’s understandable that we’ve only seen the Ghostbusters actor in the franchise’s current timeline and Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, as well as various other projects. Despite not being directly linked, an interesting incident occurred on the canceled Being Mortal film set that could potentially impact his somewhat paused career. The star of Lost in Translation was also responsible for halting the Aziz Ansari project, which bore a resemblance to the Liu-Murray Angels conflict, but in a more practical manner.
Later, Murray expressed enthusiasm for diving into fresh endeavors due to the allure of smaller tasks he’s encountered. Additionally, he likened his previous patterns to those of a bass, meaning he was ready to adopt new behaviors.
Over the past year, working on indie films, has sparked within me a renewed passion for finding new content. I’ve spent much of my time like a bass, patiently waiting for opportunities to present themselves. Whenever something ends up in my path, I seize it eagerly.
It appears that the actor from “The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou” is hinting at returning to a Wes Anderson production, specifically “The Phoenician Scheme.” Wes Anderson’s latest film, which was recently completed, is expected to hit theaters towards the end of 2025. Although fans enjoy “Frozen Empire,” Murray seems ready to take risks or dive into new projects at this point in his career.
It’s intriguing to wonder where Bill Murray will next make an appearance and how his career will fare. Time will reveal if he will abandon his laid-back approach, and perhaps secure more leading roles. In the meantime, here are some popular Bill Murray movies you can stream. Please note that some of these require a Netflix or Peacock subscription.
