Smiles and Glory Holes

Fans of the NFL are always ready to express their opinions about the league, regardless of the season. Jerry Jones, Dallas Cowboys owner who recently appeared on Landman, has certainly received his fair share of such opinions over time. This week’s coaching news might have been a cause for celebration, but after Jones made a remark that was perceived negatively with references to “smiles and gloryholes,” it was just another day of passionate discussion among fans.

A week and a half after Troy Aikman, the ex-Cowboys quarterback, received applause for criticizing NFL referees, Jerry Jones, the current owner, faced boos when he hijacked a press conference meant to highlight Brian Schottenheimer, the new head coach. Instead of praising him, Jones seemed to undermine Schottenheimer, and it was his peculiar choice of words about the team’s condition that sparked the most discussion.

There is a very low percentage of this, that is, smiles and glory holes. Very low percentage.

Before we start chuckling and joking around, let’s take a moment to acknowledge the obvious elephant in the room – the subject that’s been brought up by Jerry Jones. Rest assured, it’s not some trending search term on Pornhub or anything of a private nature. The phrase he used, one he’s employed before, actually comes from his past days working in the oil industry.

In simpler terms, the term “glory hole” was historically associated with mining, referring to an opening in a mine or pit that seemed rich in resources. Today, it is more commonly used in underwater oil extraction as a method of excavation without using floating platforms. Despite this, Jerry Jones continues to view glory holes positively, much like he would a smile. It remains unclear if Jones understands the potential confusion his use of the term might cause outside of mining culture.

It was particularly entertaining to see numerous fan reactions pour in, not only on NFL on Fox’s original post, but also across various social media platforms. Here are some of the most notable and well-respected comments I encountered:

  • Add it to the Jerryisms bingo card – @JeffKolbFOX4
  • Maybe the real glory holes are the friends we made along the way – @avicardi
  • i beg ur finest pardon sir? – @zackvworld
  • perfect Bar name 😂 – @DannChesmore
  • Man, they keep closing them down around the DFW area 😳🤣😂 – @terrypennington
  • I hope the people around Jerry Jones never tell him what “glory hole” actually means – @WVGauntlet
  • My buddy told me this at a dive bar outside of Reno once – @iamthejazzygoat
  • Jerry jones smiles and glory holes is as good as clear eyes full hearts can’t lose – @DonnRunyan
  • That this isn’t even the first time Jerry Jones has talked about glory holes at a press conference is wild. – @JoeB_91

Jerry Jones’ history of employing the term “glory holes” in his television interviews can be traced as far back as 2022, though it’s uncertain how frequently he may have utilized this terminology prior to the widespread sharing of internet video clips.

It’s interesting to note that many commenters zeroed in on his “very low percentage” regarding glory holes in the area, and if you thought the famous Jim Carrey line from Dumb & Dumber was used the most, you’d be right.

  • But there is a percentage – @jkfender
  • So, not zero… – @THE_ODJ
  • So you’re telling me there’s a chance – @skeshr

It’s not too shocking that the number of people teasing Jerry Jones about his choice of words was significantly lower compared to the multitude of ardent Cowboys fans criticizing the press conference details, the coach’s hiring, and various other aspects affecting the 2025-2026 season. However, for a brief while, there were some entertaining moments.

It’s quite likely that in the near future, we’ll witness a major documentary series focusing on the ’90s Dallas Cowboys. Fingers crossed, this project takes place when Jerry Jones is still eager and fit enough to share his stories on camera.
