A Squid Game Star May Have Spoiled A Key Season 3 Death

The second season of “Squid Game” remains just as lethal as before, introducing new games such as Mingle and the Six-Legged Pentathlon that keep the masked guards on their toes. These games lead to the filling of their coffin-shaped gifts – a chilling reminder from game creator Oh Il-nam (O Yeong-su) – at the end of each round. Amidst all the violence, one player shines with a golden heart: Player 149, Jang Geum-ja (Kang Ae-Sim).

Geum-ja, a mother filled with love, joins the games as a means to clear her son Park Yong-sik’s (Yang Dong-geun) debts, unaware that he too is participating under the alias Player 007. Swiftly, she transforms into more than just a mother figure for Yong-sik. She opens her heart to Cho Hyun-ju (Park Sung-hoon), understanding and accepting Player 120 as transgender, even though she may not fully grasp the concept. Moreover, she takes on a protective role towards Player 222, Jun-hee (Jo Yori), who is expecting a child, keeping a watchful eye over her throughout the games.

Following several narrow escapes throughout Season 2, such as when Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) and Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun) snatch her at the last moment during Mingle, Geum-ja manages to stay alive. Yet, there’s a hint that the actress portraying this cherished mother might have inadvertently revealed during an interview for “Squid Game” that her character doesn’t make it to the end of Season 3.

Geum-ja might not survive all of Season 3

2025 can’t come soon enough for me as a fan, eagerly awaiting the premiere of “Squid Game” Season 3! The cliffhanger at the end of Season 2 has left us all pondering the destiny of the captivating ensemble of fresh characters. Alas, some beloved souls like Kim Young-mi (played by Kim Si-eun) and Thanos (Choi Su-bong) met their tragic ends in Season 2. Yet, I can’t help but wonder about Geum-ja, her son, and those she has nurtured under her protective wing. Will they emerge victorious in the deadly games or face an equally heartbreaking fate? Only time will tell!

In an interview with GogglerMY, it appears that Kang Ae-Sim inadvertently revealed a grim future for Geum-ja. When asked about the challenges of filming Seasons 2 and 3 concurrently, Kang Ae-Sim and Yang Dong-geun mentioned that they spent six months on the “Squid Game” set. Kang went on to note that while it was only half a year for her and Yang, other actors had spent a full year there.

In response, Yang quickly spoke a secret to his co-star and playfully covered her mouth. It seems clear from this interaction that Kang’s words were considered a spoiler by Yang. Given their abbreviated filming timeline compared to other cast members, it might imply that the characters Geum-ja and Yong-sik, who are mother and son, may not survive for long in the upcoming season. Consequently, the struggle between Gi-hun and The Frontman would carry on past their departure.

The death of Geum-ja would be devastating

In the hypothetical scenario of Geum-ja’s character passing away in Squid Game Season 3, it would undoubtedly be a heartbreaking event for both the show’s audience and actress Kang Ae-Sim. During an interview with Korea Times, Kang expressed her excitement about joining the project and embracing such a vibrant character. She stated that the script was so captivating that she couldn’t help but finish reading it in one sitting. When asked about working alongside her on-screen son, Yang Dong-geun, she referred to the experience as a blessing. Consequently, if Kang were required to film Geum-ja (and potentially Yong-sik) passing away, it would certainly be a melancholic day on set.

The intense affection Kang has for the series and its characters resonates with viewers, causing quite a few of them to voice their sadness at the prospect of Geum-ja meeting her end. On Reddit, user Ok_Jacket_2366 shared that if Geum-ja dies in the upcoming season, they will undoubtedly cry. They consider Geum-ja as not just a mother to her son but also to everyone else due to her nurturing and kind nature.

Despite Geum-ja possibly not surviving to cook for Hyun-ju or witness Jun-hee as a mother (a scenario fans are hoping for in Season 3), there’s a strong belief that she won’t give up without a struggle. User CookieCatSupreme expressed, “Given her past mentions of fighting in the Korean War and carrying a knife with her, I truly hope we get to see her exhibit some badass traits at least once in the upcoming season.
