At the Netflix event held in Los Angeles on January 29, 2025, John Mulaney announced that his new talk show will be premiering on Netflix soon, with a lot more of John Mulaney to come. The series, titled Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney, is set to premiere its first season in March, and they’ve already started working on Season 2.
Discussions about John Mulaney hosting a talk show surfaced in October 2024, after the acclaimed release of his Netflix limited series titled “Everybody’s in L.A.” earlier that year. Mulaney was so thrilled about launching his own talk show that he allegedly declined the opportunity to host the 97th Academy Awards, opting instead to concentrate on this project.
John Mulaney’s new talk show, Everybody’s Live with John Mulaney, is set to premiere on Netflix on March 12, 2025. According to IndieWire, the series will air weekly for a total of 12 episodes, wrapping up in June 2025. When asked about his motivation behind this talk show, Mulaney humorously remarked, “This was one of those projects neither Netflix nor I really needed, but since they were leaving the talk show scene and I’ve never wanted to host a talk show, it seemed like the ideal time for this.” In another jab at Netflix, Mulaney joked about pitching a revolutionary talk show when it’s actually one of television’s oldest formats.
I believe this program is going to be something captivating that viewers will look forward to. Our host will wear a suit while taking phone calls from the audience. This show represents Netflix’s dedication to reviving elements of the 20th century. While there’s nothing original about my approach, by arranging existing elements in an unconventional order, it gives the impression of something new, and that’s what truly matters.
Mulaney also teased what fans can expect from the series, saying:
“Our broadcast will be worldwide, instantly accessible. We’ll never be important or useful as a news source. We’ll always act impulsively. Netflix will continuously supply us with data that we choose not to consider. Here, you can witness an assortment of unlikely pairings such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Nikki Glaser, alongside a family therapist, accompanied by music from Mannequin Pussy (though we can’t guarantee Mannequin Pussy will always be available). This is quite the intriguing endeavor. Since Harry and Meghan, Netflix hasn’t invested this much without having a clear strategy in mind.
As a longtime collaborator with Netflix, I’ve graced their platform since the debut of “The Comeback Kid” in 2015, where my comedy specials found their perfect home. Fast forward to 2023, and my latest offering, “Baby J,” was met with rave reviews and even bagged the Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Comedy Special, along with the prestigious Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing in a Variety Special.
In the year 2024, I took on an exciting new role as host of “John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A.” This six-episode limited series aired from May 3 to May 10 and marked my foray into the world of talk show hosting, providing an intriguing preview of what’s to come.
Additionally, we found out that Richard Kind and the attention-grabbing food delivery robot, Saymo, will reappear on Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney. Moreover, Deadline has shared that Netflix commissioned not one but two seasons for this new show. However, it remains undecided how long Mulaney and his team will take a pause between these seasons.
John Mulaney Is What Netflix Needs Right Now
A weekly live talk show with one of the world’s top comedians, spanning three months, is a shrewd business decision by Netflix, aimed at retaining subscribers following their recent price increase. With costs on the rise, many people might consider reducing their streaming services, and Netflix has garnered some negative sentiment for approving numerous shows but then canceling them. With hit series like “Cobra Kai”, “Squid Game”, and “Stranger Things” due to end in 2025, Netflix needs to introduce new high-impact productions to maintain viewer interest.
The proposition “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” appears robust initially, but its longevity is questionable in the long run. Given Mulaney’s high demand as a comedian and his agreement to host twelve weeks of a talk show, it seems more like a short-term comedy performance than an enduring series like “The Tonight Show” or “The Late Show,” which air regularly. If the series gains enough popularity, Netflix and Mulaney might extend it, making it a new flagship program for their streaming service. It’s clear that Netflix is optimistic that Mulaney, with his distinctive sarcastic humor, can revolutionize the talk show format for a younger audience, considering the less restrictive nature of a streaming platform compared to networks such as NBC, CBS, or ABC.
Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney will debut on Netflix on Mar. 12, 2025.
