In the dusty halls of justice, where hope is a currency traded, Faruk Fatih Özer, the once high-flying founder of the defunct Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, had a sliver of his sentence sliced away.
Turns out, the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice didn’t quite buy the whole ‘organized crime’ bit, but they’re still not fans of his money laundering and fraud shenanigans, so that conviction stands tall like a lighthouse in a storm.
Özer, who was handed a sentence longer than most geological eras—11,190 years—for swindling over 400,000 dreamers out of a cool $2 billion, is still cooling his heels in the clink.
But hey, at least he won’t be doing time for the ‘organized’ part of his escapades. The court, in its infinite wisdom, has decided he deserves a do-over on some counts, shipping the case back down to the lower courts like a boomerang that never quite comes back.
And while Özer might be celebrating his partial victory, the court says he’s still the guest of honor at the penal hotel for other dastardly deeds.
The Great Thodex Debacle
In the spring of 2021, Thodex went down faster than a lead balloon, cutting off withdrawals and leaving users richer only in heartache.
Özer did what any self-respecting scammer would do—he booked it to Albania. But the long arm of the law caught up with him in 2022, and he was shipped back to Turkey in 2023 like a package with insufficient postage.
Now his legal eagles are squawking for leniency, claiming his sentence is heavier than a black hole. Özer’s been accused of more dirty deeds than a Dickens novel, and his story keeps getting twistier than a pretzel.
He initially vowed to play nice with the Turkish authorities and return the pilfered pennies. But then he spun a yarn about a cyberattack that cleaned out the exchange’s coffers—a tale as believable as a unicorn selling insurance.
His vanishing act sparked a criminal investigation hotter than a supernova, an international game of hide-and-seek, and protests from investors who felt like they’d bought a one-way ticket to Broke City.
Thodex was once a shiny star in Turkey’s crypto sky, with over 400,000 users and a daily trade volume that would make Scrooge McDuck blush.
