Chase Stokes, a rising star from Outer Banks, is demonstrating his leading man abilities yet again by taking the main role in the pulse-pounding action thriller titled Valiant One. In this movie, Stokes portrays Captain Edward Brockman, a soldier who prefers working with technology over confronting the dangers of war. However, when the helicopter he’s on crashes in North Korea, Captain Brockman is forced to summon his courage and guide a group of inexperienced tech experts through hostile territory to reach safety.

The cast, along with director Steve Barnett, have put in significant effort to create an honest and respectful portrayal of the lives of brave American soldiers who sacrificed for their country. Chase Stokes, known for his role in Outer Banks, bid farewell to the North Carolina coastline and welcomed the unfamiliar landscape of hostile enemy territory as he accepted the lead role in the 2025 action thriller, Valiant One. In this film, he departs from his teen drama persona to play Captain Edward Brockman, a tech specialist who heads a team on an exhilarating mission that takes them out of North Korea. Their helicopter tragically crashes, eliminating the skilled Delta squad assigned to escort him. Brockman then teams up with Selby (played by Lana Condor), a dedicated medic specialist who, having become an American citizen, enlists in the military to express her gratitude towards her adopted homeland. Her ambition and lack of combat experience prove challenging but essential for their survival.

In their respective hit Netflix shows, both Stokes and Condor gained immense popularity – Stokes in the show “Outer Banks” and Condor from the trilogy “To All the Boys I’ve Loved.” Additionally, they will be joined by Desmin Borges known for “You’re the Worst,” Callan Mulvey famed from “Avengers: Endgame,” and Jonathan Whitesell of “The 100.” The upcoming series “Valiant One” follows Brockman’s remarkable journey as he steps up to guide his under-prepared fellow soldiers through challenging terrain and combat without any military backup, undergoing a profound transformation in the process.

Stokes Fully Commits to Embodying a U.S. Army Soldier in ‘Valiant One’

Stokes immersed himself thoroughly in accurately portraying Captain Edward Brockman’s character, engaging in extensive military training – from mastering weapons and movements to learning techniques for breaking into buildings – alongside his fellow cast members. This was all done to ensure a convincing portrayal of the fish-out-of-water U.S. Army soldier in the film.

To prepare for this demanding role, the star of Uglies collaborated with a former member of Naval Special Warfare Group 3. This step was taken at director Steve Barnett’s request, as he aimed to express appreciation towards soldiers and authentically represent military culture in the film. In an interview with Variety in November 2024, Stokes shared this information.

During our evaluation of the film, we screened it for individuals in the military, and they were highly satisfied with how authentic our portrayal was… My character deviates from the typical soldier stereotype. He’s an office worker on a base who finds himself in an unusual predicament that turns into quite an extraordinary adventure for him. In essence, it’s a tale of a unique heroic journey.

Barnett and producer Alan Powell aimed to portray authentic battle scenarios and life in enemy territory for soldiers, paying tribute to the courageous men and women serving our country who confront unimaginable challenges and extraordinary situations. Their intention was to express their patriotism while providing both cast members and viewers a true-to-life depiction of a soldier’s existence and the numerous sacrifices they make for the common good. From the very beginning of this endeavor, we made a point to avoid expressing any particular political stance – be it pro-military, anti-military, or even against North Korea. Instead, my intention was for it to serve as a tale about humanity as a whole.

In the action-packed thriller, Stokes, Condor, and their fellow actors in “Valiant One” will bring to life complex and empathetic characters. The film’s creation was sparked by Barnett, who drew inspiration from his friend’s harrowing real-life story while serving as a Navy SEAL. During a routine mission to transport a Raytheon technology specialist to Patriot missile installations via helicopter, their friend and his companion narrowly escaped a fatal crash during a violent storm near the North Korean border. The skilled pilot managed to pull them out of a deadly plunge.

The intense ordeal inspired Barnett to imagine what might have transpired if they had indeed crashed in enemy territory. He constructed a gripping and suspenseful narrative centered around a relatable protagonist who uncovers his bravery, guiding the team through the perilous Demilitarized Zone. In the same beliefnet interview, Powell articulated the core feelings and spirit of the film, aiming to instill a sense of inspiration in viewers and military personnel alike.
