Kelsey Grammer & Ted Danson Reunited After 30-Year Feud

Kelsey Grammer opened up to the New York Post about a longstanding dispute with his “Cheers” co-star Ted Danson that spanned three decades, stemming from an altercation on the set of their popular sitcom which ran on NBC from 1982 to 1993.

As a cinephile looking back, I’d say the whole thing wasn’t as big as it seemed. Truthfully, there wasn’t much of an argument at all. It was more like a reflection of what I was going through personally during that time.

I was battling self-doubt and had been drinking excessively. Ted happened to express his frustration that sometimes I didn’t show up fully prepared. I acknowledged his feelings, saying ‘I respect that.’ That’s really all there was to it.

In simpler terms, Grammer stated, “Perhaps Ted distanced himself from a potentially stronger friendship. Perhaps he was looking out for himself. To be honest, I’m not sure. But, I acknowledged, ‘Thank you,’ and we were okay with that.

The situation between them was more like a silent estrangement, but it was still substantial enough that in October 2024, Dananson found it necessary to apologize to Grammer on their shared podcast with Woody Harrelson titled “Where Everybody Knows Your Name (Sometimes)”. Danson expressed:

As a devoted fan of television, it’s left me with a tinge of regret that our paths crossed during the ‘Cheers’ era. There was this one instance where I let my temper get the best of me, and it’s become something we both remember quite vividly. But here’s the thing… It’s struck me that I’ve missed out on an entire three decades of Kelsey Grammer’s career. I can’t help but feel responsible for this oversight, almost as if I owe you an apology. No, it’s not that I feel like apologizing to you, it’s more like… I apologize to both of us for not actively engaging in his work after ‘Cheers’, and truly, I do apologize.

Grammer accepted the apology, stating that he too wished the pair had spent more time together.

Will Fans Ever See Dr. Frasier Crane Onscreen Again?

Despite their personal disagreement, Kelsey Grammer and Ted Danson managed to collaborate amicably over the years. Apart from “Cheers,” Danson played his character Sam Malone again on Grammer’s successful spinoff series “Frasier.” In a reciprocal move, Grammer made an appearance on Danson’s CBS comedy “Becker” in 2003.

When asked about the possibility of a reunion for the Cheers cast in a potential revival, Grammer firmly stated that the cherished Boston bar had permanently shut its doors.

As much as I wish it could, ‘Cheers’ won’t be making a comeback – it’s simply impossible to replicate the unique blend of characters and settings that made it special. The era it portrayed is long gone, with its vibrant culture and iconic bar scene seemingly extinct in today’s world. I can’t say I’ve found a modern equivalent, at least not one that’s on my radar anymore…

Dr. Frasier Crane made a comeback in a revival series on Paramount+, but unfortunately, the network decided to end it after just two seasons. Previously, Grammer had expressed his ambition for the show to reach 100 episodes, however, unless another streaming platform takes over, this aspiration remains unfulfilled.
