It was previously announced in 2017 that a film based on the game “Sleeping Dogs” would be made, featuring Donnie Yen who is known for his role in “Rogue One.” However, Donnie Yen recently confirmed that this project has since been scrapped.
It seems like someone’s working hard to make that movie happen, and guess who it is? None other than me, your friendly neighborhood Marvel Kung Fu Master, Shang-Chi, aka Simu Liu!
Simu Liu and Sleeping Dogs
In recent weeks, discussions about a potential “Sleeping Dogs” movie have resurfaced after Donnie Yen announced in an interview with Polygon that the film had been scrapped. Subsequently, Liu expressed his efforts to revive the “Sleeping Dogs” movie in a post he made. Here’s what he shared:
Liu hasn’t disclosed who he’s been discussing the movie with, but he knows exactly who he’d contact if the project gets approved. He also mentions that if they manage to make this happen, his first call would be to Donnie, followed by Will Yun Lee, the original voice of Wei. Lastly, he jokingly adds that he’d then call DoorDash to find a restaurant nearby that serves pork buns.
What is Sleeping Dogs about?
In 2012, the game titled “Sleeping Dogs” was created by United Front Games and published by Square Enix. This game’s narrative revolves around a character named Wei Shen, who is an undercover police officer tasked with penetrating the Sun On Yee Triad.
The game falls under the genre of action-adventure, where players navigate the narrative using a variety of martial arts and parkour techniques. This game has received praise for its compelling storyline and vivid portrayal of modern-day Hong Kong as its backdrop.
While speaking with Polygon, Yen detailed his journey in producing the film: “I dedicated considerable effort and resources, including investing a portion of my personal funds, to collaborate with these producers on the script and secure some of the rights.
For years, I’ve harbored a dream, nurturing vivid images in my mind. The desire to bring that dream to life has only grown stronger over time. However, as you might understand the challenges of the industry, Hollywood, I’ve been grappling with it for years now. It’s unfortunate, but things didn’t quite pan out as planned.
2020s is the Decade of Video Game Adaptations
For a while, film adaptations of video games were often criticized as flops. However, the 2020s have seen some remarkable successes in bringing popular video game characters to life on the big screen, such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros., and even TV shows like The Last of Us and Fallout have garnered critical acclaim.
Speaking about the film “Sleeping Dogs,” there’s some debate on how they could make it distinct, given the abundance of gangster action films based in Hong Kong. Liu might succinctly describe the project as ‘a blend of “The Departed” and kung fu,’ which could differentiate it from those who view it as merely a replica of the “John Wick” series.
At present, an official Sleeping Dogs movie has yet to be confirmed, but let’s hope that Liu’s stardom will reignite the project.
