Following the flop of Kraven the Hunter in cinemas, Sony’s Spider-Man universe took an extended break from production. Given that the franchise struggled to thrive without a central Spiderman character, even with Tom Hardy’s Venom trilogy proving popular among fans, it makes sense that they would pause. However, it appears Sony is still eager to develop their own cinematic universe, now focusing on a new Spider-Man character. A rumor suggests they may be preparing to launch the Sony Spider-Man Universe after Avengers: Secret Wars, by introducing none other than Miles Morales as the new web-slinger.
As per Cosmic Circus, there are whispers that Sony could restart their troubled Spider-Man franchise post “Avengers: Secret Wars” with Miles Morales taking center stage in a live-action adaptation. However, this information should be treated as unconfirmed until it’s officially confirmed by the studio or a reputable industry source. Still, there are strong indications that this could be true, given that Miles Morales has been rumored to be part of Sony’s future plans for some time now. The key point here is Sony’s apparent intention to reboot their Spider-Man Universe by introducing a live-action version of the superhero character.
From the info at hand, it appears that Miles might find himself in a revamped Sony universe, which is planned to debut following the events of Secret Wars. Keep in mind that this information should be taken with a bit of skepticism.
The potential issue here is that Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, wants to incorporate Miles Morales into the MCU. It seems logical for this alternate version of Spider-Man to show up in Avengers: Secret Wars, marking the end of the Multiverse Saga. However, following Secret Wars, Sony might gain control over the character, positioning Miles Morales as the main character in a new live-action series. Additionally, there’s also the animated Spider-Verse trilogy, which keeps getting pushed back indefinitely.
Every ‘Spider-Man’ Project Currently in the Works
At present, there are multiple significant Spider-Man productions underway at both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Presently, Disney+ is airing weekly episodes for the animated series titled “Spider-Man: Your Neighborhood Friend“, positioned within the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse, though not in the primary timeline. The show has garnered praise from critics due to its exploration of storylines and villains not typically seen in the Tom Holland-led film series. Concurrently, Marvel Studios and Sony are hastening their efforts on “Spider-Man 4“, scheduled for filming later this year and speculated to revolve around a multiverse-centric narrative.
From a Sony perspective, they continue to work on “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” despite some setbacks, it may still release in either 2026 or 2027. Contrary to rumors, Sony is currently producing a Nicolas Cage starring Amazon Prime Video series called “Spider-Noir“, where he reprises his role from the animated Spider-Verse as a live-action, noir-inspired Spider-Man. The future of their cinematic universe will likely be decided in “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which could potentially bring together characters originally from Sony’s discontinued franchise.
