It’s well-known among Deadpool enthusiasts that comic book artist and creator Rob Liefeld isn’t shy about expressing his opinions. Known for creating Cable as well, Liefeld is known for speaking his mind honestly, making his recent stand against Marvel quite significant to fans. With over 30 years of collaboration with the publisher, it seems that Liefeld is terminating his association with Marvel due to what he perceives as unfair treatment during the New York premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine.
In his 90-minute podcast episode called “Robservations“, and in a later interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Liefeld openly discussed several instances during the premiere of “Deadpool & Wolverine” that he found disrespectful. He mentioned that unlike the releases of the first two movies under 20th Century Fox, neither he nor his family were invited to the film’s afterparty this time around. Additionally, Liefeld expressed feelings of being overlooked by higher-ups at Disney and Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige. According to Liefeld, despite standing near each other during the premiere, Feige never spoke to him, which he perceived as a deliberate attempt to embarrass, undermine, or defeat him.
Additionally, Liefeld shared that he had posed for professional photographs alongside creators of Deadpool and Wolverine at the film premiere; however, he was subsequently informed that all the images were erased. He suspects these photos were taken merely to appease him, as they weren’t intended for use. It is worth mentioning that some snaps featuring Liefeld with his family and individual shots were uploaded onto Disney’s Getty Images press platform to publicize the premiere event.
Rob Liefeld’s Problems With Marvel Began in 2023
In the summer of 2023, I found myself parting ways with Marvel due to certain perceived injustices following their premiere event. However, my relationship with them has never truly felt right since then. You see, it was around this time that I discovered Marvel had altered the credits for Wolverine, crediting Roy Thomas as a co-creator of the character. Although I didn’t start working with Marvel until after the creation of Wolverine, I have a close connection to Christine Valada – the widow of Len Wein, another co-creator of the iconic character. Ms. Valada expressed her displeasure over these credit changes initiated by Marvel, and as a friend, I share her sentiments.
In the following year, Liefeld made a unique request regarding the film Deadpool & Wolverine. He didn’t ask for additional funds, but rather inquired about his attendance at movie premieres and other related promotional events. Unlike Marvel’s usual practice of crediting comic creators in the end credits, Liefeld desired to be recognized in the opening credits instead. In a 2024 email to Marvel, Liefeld expressed his concern over Marvel’s treatment of creators, stating that without their ideas and creations, there would be no films or blockbusters to produce. He emphasized that he was not just a convenient tool like a ‘Staples Easy Button’, but the source of all the imagination behind it all.
In the email, Liefeld proposed that his demands be forwarded to Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger, but this suggestion was not favorably received by Marvel. Liefeld didn’t receive any response to his email, and he was informed by his representatives that his message wasn’t well-received. Liefeld suspects this may have contributed to the way he was treated at the premiere and receiving only a shared credit for creating Deadpool in the movie, alongside Fabian Nicieza, who earned his credit for penning the first Deadpool appearance in New Mutants #98. Critics argue that Liefeld has minimized Nicieza’s role in developing the character over time, which has been a source of debate.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to share some insider details about the creative dynamics behind the scenes of Marvel productions. Rob Liefeld, a renowned comic book creator, felt surprisingly comfortable on the sets of Deadpool (2016) and Deadpool 2 (2018), but he found himself less than welcome during the filming of Deadpool & Wolverine in London. This, coupled with subsequent events, has left him with a rather bitter taste regarding Marvel’s Kevin Feige.
Liefeld expressed that Feige doesn’t treat comic book creators well, citing his personal experience. He mentioned that he believed a significant point of contention could have been resolved if Feige had acknowledged him at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere, alongside his family. Interestingly, Liefeld held up DC Studios co-head James Gunn as an exemplary figure who treats comic book creators favorably, even going so far as to fly some of them to the Superman set during production.
Regardless of which camp supporters find themselves in, Liefeld felt compelled to express his honest sentiments. A piece of me resonates with this more than him being excluded from post-events or feeling snubbed on the red carpet. These feelings seem to have been simmering for some time, and it’ll be intriguing to observe Marvel’s response once Liefeld’s podcast gains popularity.
