Detroit Officially Proclaims February 7 as J Dilla Day

In his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, it has been decided that the anniversary of J Dilla’s birth on February 7th will hereafter be recognized as J Dilla Day.

According to HipHopDX, the news was announced earlier in the week by the city council. The day honors Dilla, who “crossed genre boundaries and impacted not only hip hop and electronic artists but also pop, soul, classical, and jazz musicians.” His daughter, Ja’Mya Yancey, expressed her gratitude during the meeting, saying, “Words fail to express how thankful we are for this recognition.” She added, “For many years, he has been celebrated throughout the city, nation, and world for the entire month of February.

Yancey stated, “My sister Ty-Monae Whitlow and I strive to uphold and celebrate his memory and what he stood for, and taking this significant action will aid us in carrying forward the work he started.

The city revealed a fresh street sign nearby Dilla’s residence at the intersection of Nevada and Charest. Moreover, it has been announced that the Detroit Pistons will conduct a private event on February 7, where his family is likely to attend.
