Josh Radnor Looked for Roles That “Felt Really Different” and Weren’t “Lovesick Guys” After ‘How I Met Your Mother’

Josh Radnor is opening up about not wanting to be typecast.

Following nine seasons portraying Ted Mosby in “How I Met Your Mother,” Radnor has expressed his intention to take on acting roles that differ from the romantic character he played on the CBS show from 2005 to 2014, as he shared with People magazine.

He explained that he often evaluated situations using a kind of ‘How I Met Your Mother’ filter, asking himself if it was distinct enough from the show’s tone. What he desired were roles that offered something fresh and unlike the typical characters – those who weren’t romantic leads in New York City searching for marriage.”

Both sentences convey the same meaning but are rephrased to be more natural and easy to read, with a focus on clarity and conciseness.

The performer went on to discuss the roles he’s taken up since then to demonstrate his versatility, which included numerous theater projects. “My debut after ‘How I Met Your Mother’ was a Broadway production titled ‘Disgraced,’ dealing with Islamophobia,” he explained. “In it, I portrayed an ethically questionable character. Later, I appeared in a PBS series called ‘Mercy Street,’ where I played a Civil War surgeon addicted to morphine.

After starring in “How I Met Your Mother”, Radnor has also been featured in shows such as “Rise”, “Hunters”, “Three Birthdays”, “All Happy Families”, and “Mercy Street”, as well as “Fleishman Is in Trouble”.

Instead, Radnor is choosing to embrace his past by launching a rewatch podcast titled “How We Made Your Mother“, acknowledging that it’s exhausting to evade such a significant aspect of oneself and one’s professional journey.

He expressed that a significant part of him is attempting to reach an understanding, almost like proposing a truce, saying, “Alright, you’ve given me much, and taken much from me. I don’t want to be at odds with you anymore, so let’s turn over a new leaf.” He feels that there might be a psychological benefit for him in this action, as it involves re-engaging at this stage of his life.

The podcast is set to debut on March 10, and it will feature Radnor as a co-host, teaming up with Craig Thomas, a fellow creator of “How I Met Your Mother”.
