The Heart Eyes Killer Reveal, And Why It Was The Right Ending
In contrast to expectations, the Heart Eyes Killer isn’t merely a Grinchy Valentine’s Day hater with a long history of heartbreaks. Instead, as revealed at the end of the movie, an unusual trio – notably including Jordana Brewster’s Detective Shaw – are the ones under the mask. It turns out that they were tracking Mason Gooding’s Jay and Olivia Holt’s Ally, even though they weren’t a couple. Their interest in them stemmed from the memorable kiss they shared earlier in the night, as Director Josh Ruben explained in an interview about the shocking twist.
I find the recent introduction of a throuple to be fascinating and refreshing, as it’s not often portrayed in media. It was amusing to see Chris and Michael expressing their motivations as being more about sexual attraction rather than heartbreak, saying they were turned on by it. This unexpected twist in the genre is delightful, sensible, funny, and even a bit chilling. The ending still retains that Stu and Billy dynamic, but it also presents an unsettling aspect that’s reminiscent of overzealous public displays of affection, yet it’s also ridiculously erotic.
In essence, “Heart Eyes” subtly conveys the idea that everyone has their unique desires, and for the Heart Eyes Killer, this twisted fascination lies in slaying couples. Although Jay and Ally were not romantically involved on Valentine’s Day, the trio of killers sensed a strong chemistry between them and marked them as potential victims. Fortunately, Jay and Ally joined forces to eliminate the Heart Eyes Killer, but Holt found the violence too overwhelming. As she reflected on filming Brewster’s demise, she noted:
Being there, I couldn’t even watch it. It was so intense.
For survival, Jay and Ally prove capable of protecting themselves, adding another horror film survival credit to Gooding’s resume. In the chaos of fleeing for safety, they unexpectedly discover a deep affection for each other – isn’t that just adorable?

How The Heart Eyes Ending Leaves The Door Open For A Sequel
Might the Heart Eyes Killer reappear? Instead of ending on a cliffhanger, filmmakers opted to embrace the romantic comedy aspect, concluding with a scene showing Jay and Ally deepening their relationship as they drove in the convertible. Josh Ruben further explained…
It provided just enough intrigue without revealing too much, I believe the mask left on the altar in the chapel is a tantalizing mystery for others to uncover. Whether its current owner is still breathing or long gone, who knows? Perhaps officials may arrive to investigate, and so on. The identity of the mask’s holder could be anyone. I didn’t dwell too much on the possibility of their exposure in the end. We aimed to hint at films that offer a final wink suggesting the killer might still be alive, but we enjoyed that it ultimately turned out to be Monica.
I inquired from the trio of writers, namely Michael Kennedy, Chris Landon, and Philip Murphy, regarding their choice against hinting at a follow-up. This is their response:
Avoid prematurely counting on success or outcomes. It’s unlucky, and it may spoil the excitement of unexpected outcomes. Instead, let’s preserve the surprise for everyone, including ourselves. After all, we have a good sense of where we want to head, but the journey is often more enjoyable when we allow for some surprises along the way.
Indeed, we’ll need to assess the reception of “Heart Eyes” first, and if this film resonates with audiences, they might consider producing more “Heart Eyes” films. Remarkably, it seems to have the potential for a franchise similar to the “Scream” series, where each installment introduces a new killer character, should it prove successful. As Ruben mentioned too:
If we were to expand on this idea, I’m referring to the longevity potential of this franchise due to its versatility. To put it simply, many romantic comedies like “My Best Friend’s Wedding” and “Bridget Jones’ Diary,” can serve as inspiration for similar storylines, characters, or situations. These stories often revolve around complicated, emotional love lives filled with heartbreak, confusion, and vulnerability.
Imagine intertwining these narratives, like slicing through a log with a machete – smooth and exciting. It would be captivating, wouldn’t it? Picture the characters from films like those of Andrew Lincoln and Keira Knightley, their stories intersecting in unexpected ways, creating a delightful blend of love-scorned, love-troubled, bumbling, fumbling, lovesick kind of lives. That’s the idea! It would be a joy to watch, don’t you think?
With so many options available, wouldn’t it be fun to catch a movie that stole your heart, perhaps with a friend…or maybe a thrilling horror flick for those who enjoy the chills and spooks with a special someone?
