One of the final movies in the former DC Extended Universe, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is thriving on Tubi. This free-to-watch streaming platform has recently added it to its collection, and now it ranks third among the top 10 most viewed titles on their service. Released in 2023, Fury of the Gods is a follow-up to the 2019 film Shazam! where the teenage superhero deals with balancing his family and everyday life while fulfilling his heroic duties. The charm of the Shazam storyline stemmed from the fact that Billy Batson’s foster family also gained powers, working alongside him as their superhero counterparts when needed.

David F. Sandberg came back to direct the movie following the significant and financial success of the initial Shazam film. Commonly compared to the film Big, but with superpowers, Shazam! (2019) was a refreshing change after Joss Whedon’s version of Justice League faced criticism. The 2019 movie was also launched post the December 2018 DCEU movie Aquaman starring Jason Momoa, which earned more than $1 billion globally, becoming the highest-grossing DCEU film. In summary, the DCEU was doing well when the first Shazam movie hit the theaters.
Regrettably, it seems the second installment of Shazam!, titled Fury of the Gods, didn’t perform nearly as well as its first part. This could be due to the extended four-year gap between sequels or the fact that a new screenwriter was hired for revisions, which may have impacted the storyline. Additionally, other films within the DCEU released between Shazam movies also underperformed financially, suggesting a possible decline for the universe that originated with Man of Steel.
‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Is a Reminder of the Former DCEU
In the sequel to Shazam!, titled Fury of the Gods, the focus shifts more towards magical elements with the daughters of the Titan Atlas serving as the primary villains. The movie continues to deliver creative action sequences and emphasizes what sets Billy apart as a hero within the DC Extended Universe. However, it seems that the charm of the character has dwindled somewhat since the initial release, as evidenced by its 49% “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes and a global box office earnings of $235 million against a production cost of $125 million.
Two years after its premiere in cinemas, it appears that more people are opting to watch a movie that some initially decided to pass up in theaters. This is suggested by the relatively low box office earnings. Interestingly, despite negative reviews from critics, the film boasts an 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that the general public enjoys it. As such, it could be an excellent pick for a relaxed viewing experience on Tubi.
Tubi consistently shows us how easier-to-access streaming platforms can increase the visibility of movies that might not have fared well at the box office initially. Although the DC film period has ended, James Gunn’s revitalization of DC Studios and the DCU is just starting. First up on Max is Creature Commandos, followed by the summer release of Superman in cinemas.
