In a fresh romantic comedy filled with hilarious slapstick humor, “Somewhat Pregnant” stars Amy Schumer as Lainy Newton, a New York City teacher, and Will Forte as Josh Lewis. This Netflix production, co-produced by Schumer and Adam Sandler, has just premiered and is currently topping the Netflix movie chart in the U.S., beating out other titles ahead of Valentine’s Day.
The movie centers around Lainy, a woman in her 40s, who yearns to establish a family with her boyfriend Dave (Damon Wayans Jr.). Sadly, he expresses interest in alternative relationships. However, Lainy becomes distressed, particularly when her friend and colleague Kate (Jillian Bell) discloses that she’s expecting a child.
In a series of unexpected events, Lainy finds herself donning a fake baby bump, only to discover a new acquaintance named Megan (Brianne Howey) who assumes Lainy is pregnant. Meanwhile, Lainy is secretly pregnant herself. Balancing her act as a pretend mom-to-be among her new friends while keeping up the truth with her old friends about not being actually expecting becomes quite the juggling act for Lainy.
In a typical fashion for romantic comedies, Lainy shares a meal at Megan’s home and encounters her brother, Josh (portrayed by Forte). Naturally, as the story unfolds, their budding relationship leads to humorous situations.
Gross-Out Humor Can’t Save ‘Kinda Pregnant‘
Although the movie ‘Kinda Pregnant‘ showcases some talent, it has dismal ratings on Rotten Tomatoes with 25% from critics and 23% from audiences. This is a rare occurrence where both critics and viewers share their dissatisfaction. IMDb rates it slightly higher at an average score of 5 out of 10, but even this is not impressive. In the review by George Edelman for MovieWeb, he notes that the crude humor fails to rescue the “overly predictable” film from being exhausting.
As someone who appreciates a good laugh, especially when it comes to pregnancy-themed humor, I must say that “Kinda Pregnant” offers a unique blend of gross-out situations and witty comedy performances. However, despite some genuinely amusing moments, the overall impact doesn’t quite reach uproarious levels; instead, it elicits more of a smirk or a chuckle. If you’re a fan of comedies like “Knocked Up” and “Bridesmaids,” you might enjoy this production, though it doesn’t quite match the lasting comedic impact or innovative plot points of its predecessors.
During the mid to late 2000s and 2010s, raunchy comedies were extremely popular, often starring individuals such as Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, Zach Galifianakis, among others. However, these movies weren’t solely male-driven; films like Bridesmaids, Bad Moms (and its sequel, A Bad Moms Christmas), and Walk of Shame also gained significant popularity with female leads.
Amy Schumer is exceptionally gifted as an actress, and her 2015 film “Trainwreck” was a major success at the box office in the comedy genre. Moreover, her TV show, “Inside Amy Schumer,” garnered numerous accolades and nominations, including two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Peabody. However, the movie “Kinda Pregnant” fails to deliver many chuckles, even with amusing scenes such as a prenatal yoga class filled with flatulence. Nevertheless, since the film has become popular on Netflix, there could be a resurgence of raunchy comedies. In any case, we might look forward to another season of “Inside Amy Schumer.
