Eddie Redmayne’s Spy Thriller Smashes Records

In the months following its premiere in November 2024, “The Day of the Jackal” featuring Eddie Redmayne (“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”) has become Peacock’s most-watched original drama series, according to a report by Deadline. Impressively, NBCUniversal notes that it reached this milestone in just 75 days on the streaming platform. Globally, it is also a huge success and holds the title of Sky’s biggest new show launch.

In this fresh spy thriller series, inspired by Frederick Forsyth’s novel and film of the same name, we follow a character named Jackal, skillfully portrayed by Eddie Redmayne, who is an expert sniper and master of disguise. This high-profile hit job he takes on promises him enough money for him to depart from his life as an assassin. However, while he’s executing the task, a British intelligence officer, played by Lashana Lynch (from No Time to Die), is doggedly chasing him. The acclaimed writer and executive producer, Ronan Bennett (known for Top Boy), has delivered a massive success for the streaming platform.

Currently, the series is currently ranked number one on Peacock in numerous global markets, according to Flix Patrol. Although NBCU hasn’t disclosed specific viewer numbers, Deadline reports that the first episode drew 4.6 million viewers within the first 28 days on Sky. The secret behind its success lies in its ongoing growth as more and more people discover it, and it has already been renewed for a second season.

‘The Day of the Jackal’ is a Hit with Critics and Audiences

The series adheres to the plotline of the original novel and film, delivering a gripping chase through Europe that has captivated both critics and viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it boasts a remarkable critical rating of 85% and an audience score of 75%. Additionally, on IMDb, The Day of the Jackal holds a solid 8.2 / 10 rating. Evidently, the show is thriving due to positive word-of-mouth, maintaining its popularity more than two months following its premiere.

According to MovieWeb’s Greg Archer in his review, the show stands out as an engaging and creative reimagining, offering a deep exploration of its central character and narrative. The production is skillfully balanced by Bennett, according to his statement.

Our main character, Jackal (Oscar-winning Redmayne, deserving of an Emmy nomination), portrays a compelling mix of steeliness and elusiveness as a solitary assassin. Yet, he is also intricate and tormented by his past, which leaves him vulnerable. This duality stirs our emotions, making us uncertain. Are we rooting for him to eliminate questionable individuals? Or are we more interested in seeing him undergo emotional and psychological growth?

Redmayne shared with MovieWeb that he found inspiration in the ordinary, non-glamorous side of David Bowie, whom he saw in a 1970s interview, rather than the flamboyant persona from his “Ziggy Stardust” era. In his own words:

One of the few instances where he is truly himself, both fashion-wise and without makeup, is being discussed here. Bowie admitted that it’s uncomfortable for him to be himself but he excels at embodying other characters. Despite his reserved nature, he remains mysterious, captivating, and draws you in completely with his unique perspective.

The Day of the Jackalis currently streaming on Peacock.
