Designer Armando Cabral and home furnishing brand USM Modular Furniture have joined forces for a unique collaboration, drawing inspiration from Cabral’s rich West African cultural background. The duo has officially revealed an exciting collection featuring items such as a bookshelf, a storage bed, an end table, and a tray. This assortment showcases Cabral’s heritage while incorporating USM’s signature streamlined aesthetic.
The title “NKYINKYIM” draws inspiration from an Adrinkra symbol used by the Akan people of Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire. This symbol represents the twisting journey of progress and obstacles. The design of this symbol is mirrored in the bookshelf, seamlessly adapting to USM’s modular building system. It weaves intricately, going back and forth, and rests on four primary supports.
In another area, the bed frame, bathed in a warm orange hue, stands out powerfully with its elongated headboard and integrated nightstands. Similarly, Cabral adapts USM’s design language to a partially upholstered armchair, exhibited in olive green with brown textured cushions. In regards to the importance of the design elements, Cabral commented: “For me, the modular aspect of USM’s designs represents adaptability, as each component unites to create a harmonious and functional structure,” according to the brand’s statement.
