In an unexpected twist for director Scott Derrickson, known for films like “Sinister” and “The Black Phone”, the upcoming horror romance titled “The Gorge” on Apple TV+ (Feb 14) includes a sensual dance sequence set to Yeah Yeah Yeahs music. As explained in a recent interview with MovieWeb, Derrickson chose each song placement, feeling they suited the scenes best. In contrast to the originally scripted sex scene, he desired a more romantic dance number, stating it wasn’t romantic enough for him. He wanted something unique – “When was the last time you saw a genuine romantic dance sequence in a movie?
Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy play dual roles as both dancers and snipers in a movie that centers around a secretive ravine. Their task isn’t to deter entry, but rather to safeguard something hidden within. The film features an impressive soundtrack and memorable score by the incredibly productive duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who craft a versatile sound barrier for the movie. Director Derrickson stated, “Reznor and Ross are simply the best, and they’re my favorite composers.
After reading the script, they expressed their appreciation for it. During our Zoom meeting, I told them, ‘You are my preferred composers because your work doesn’t just enhance the visual aspect of each film or reinforce what’s already on screen. Instead, your scores consistently introduce an additional element that isn’t initially present.’
In simpler terms, Derrickson explained that a film consists of three main elements – sound, design, and visuals. However, he added that the music (score) is an additional layer which significantly enhances the overall movie experience. He described it as the ‘soul’ of the movie, explaining that he wanted the score to contribute more than just reinforcing the picture; instead, it should bring a unique dimension to the film. Trent Reznor was then asked what this third element might be, and Derrickson replied that it represents the essence or soul of the movie itself.
The production is rich with plot, emotional romance, backstory, and striking visual design, but what truly defines it is the music I envisioned, which is precisely what they composed. They are incredibly collaborative and dedicated, often attending more mixes than any other composers I’ve worked with. Instead of going through the motions, they put in the effort to create something exceptional.
How Reznor & Ross Made Scott Derrickson’s Favorite Scene Even Better
Derrickson particularly admires a scene in the movie he refers to as “the bone tree wasteland.” This area is characterized by a mist that turns purple and an eerie graveyard of oversized skeletal trees. The scene exudes a sense of suffering, which resonated with him deeply. The music accompanying this sequence was the first piece of score provided to him, and he found it extraordinary.
That particular piece of music combined with the image leading us into town is my favorite as a director, it holds a special place for me. Personally, I believe that beat is my favorite, and it’s when the script references T.S. Eliot’s poem about the world not ending with a loud explosion but a quiet whimper. To me, there’s an extraordinary charm in that scene, its music, and the accompanying images.
