Liam Payne, former member of One Direction and troubled singer, spent his final days before death in October, largely confined to a Buenos Aires hotel, as a consequence of years of intermittent drug abuse. This struggle was rooted in personal issues he had long been unwilling to confront, according to his ex-fiancée, who spoke about it in an interview with Rolling Stone.
On Tuesday, I stumbled upon an article in a gaming mag that dug deep into the private life of one of my favorite game developers. It unveiled some intriguing facets of his relationship with his ex-fiancée and how she supposedly took legal action over his past actions, all while grieving his recent demise.
Maya Henry, both model and author, shared an account of her complex romantic journey with a troubled pop star in the 2024 novel Looking Forward. This book, inspired by real events, subtly recounts their story, from meeting in 2018, to getting engaged in 2020, breaking up and reconciling in 2021, then splitting again in 2022.
Though I had deep affection for him, he performed actions that caused me pain I could not fully comprehend, and this persisted even after we parted ways. Later, I found out that Payne had been sharing private photos of me with his friends for years. In a statement to Rolling Stone, I said, ‘On drugs, he transformed into someone almost unrecognizable — so different from his sober persona. I hoped each instance would serve as a wake-up call for him to seek help, but it never did. I wanted to support him. My love for him was so strong that I convinced myself I could heal the rift. However, he never seemed to acknowledge his actions or seek change.’
Henry stated, “I understood there were aspects of himself he was battling – parts of his personality he wasn’t prepared to confront fully, not even within our relationship. In the long run, it wasn’t just the infidelities or the addictions that caused us to split; it was the discovery that I had invested years in something that turned out not to be what I believed it was. I don’t blame him for his struggles.
The publication claims that various sources hinted at Payne’s battles with his sexual identity. According to one unnamed source, during his relationship with Maya, Payne reportedly sent explicit messages to men. Additionally, a male waiter who met Payne in Argentina, who is currently facing accusations of providing the pop star with drugs, claimed that they had an intimate encounter in the hotel room where he later fell to his death.
According to unnamed sources, it’s claimed that Payne repeatedly called Henry to torment her following their split. After discovering that private images of her had allegedly been disseminated by Payne since their engagement, she is said to have consulted legal professionals to investigate possible ways to take legal action.
In the days leading up to his passing, Payne was with his partner, popular influencer Kate Cassidy, at CasaSur in Buenos Aires’ Palermo district. Tragically, he fell about 40 feet from a balcony following a tumultuous series of events, which culminated in a public outburst in the lobby, hiring escorts, and causing damage to his room. The publication discloses that Payne and his bandmates often exited their hotel rooms via balconies during their world tours when they were at the pinnacle of their success.
A hotel employee shared with Rolling Stone’s journalists, Kory Grow and Jon Blistein, that it was clear Liam wasn’t feeling well, just by looking at him. They also spent a considerable amount of time interviewing Rogelio “Roger” Nores for their cover story. Nores is the young Argentinian businessman who had befriended Payne long ago and has been rumored to have acted as his guardian during his trips to Argentina, though he’s consistently denied this claim while dealing with charges related to his friend’s demise.
Nores stated to the magazine that he was Payne’s friend, not a doctor, psychiatrist, or legal guardian. He never held any authority over him. He wasn’t Payne’s manager or his father; all one can do is offer help.”
Or more casually:
“Nores told the magazine he was just Payne’s buddy, not in charge of his health, legal matters, career, or upbringing. He could only lend a hand.
On October 16, the day of Payne’s unfortunate demise, the two had breakfast together at the hotel restaurant. According to Nores, he objected when the singer downed a shot of whiskey; later, in his room, his companion claimed they didn’t see any narcotics that Payne had openly displayed. About thirty minutes after he left, two sex workers arrived and demanded the $5,000 Payne had allegedly promised them, which he refused to pay. This led to a disturbance in the hotel room, and the women complained about Payne to the hotel staff who then contacted Nores. Now, both the hotel staff members and the businessman are facing charges due to their negligence in his death. The magazine article states that Payne ordered cocaine at around 4 p.m. on October 16, and the two women departed from the hotel shortly afterwards.
Upon re-entering the hotel room, Nores discovered items such as white powder, aluminum foil, and a homemade pipe. He was displeased upon seeing these, as stated in his official report, and decided to leave his friend. Payne had mentioned meeting an unidentified acquaintance in the lobby, but instead, he caused commotions twice after glancing at his laptop’s screen. In these instances, he was escorted back to his room where, according to a witness, he began shaking or convulsing, frothing at the mouth, and appeared to be heavily under the influence of drugs.
Guards were placed at Payne’s door. No one saw him alive again.
Manager Nores from CasaSur Palermo, along with the hotel’s receptionist, ended up facing charges for an offense similar to manslaughter in the U.S., which is known as “culpable homicide.
At the time of his demise, Payne was found to have remnants of alcohol, cocaine, and prescribed antidepressants in his body, as indicated in a toxicology report disclosed by the Buenos Aires prosecutor’s office in November. A criminal court judge has deemed sufficient evidence exists for these cases to proceed to trial, with an appeal hearing set for February 11th.
