Ben Folds has stepped down from his position as artistic advisor for the National Symphony Orchestra, following the incidents that took place at the Kennedy Center.
On Wednesday, the ex-lead vocalist of Ben Folds Five, currently a singer-songwriter, announced his resignation from his role as artistic advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra (NSO), associated with the Kennedy Center. This decision comes in response to recent changes at the Kennedy Center, which were highlighted by President Trump’s announcement that he intends to dismiss several board members, including chairman David M. Rubenstein, and replace them with himself as chair.
On a Wednesday update, Trump announced via Truth Social that he’d assumed the role as chairperson for the Kennedy Center. The Kennedy Center didn’t promptly reply to a query for a statement, yet his name is listed on their official site.
On Monday, Trump announced on social media his intention to temporarily assign Richard Grenell, previously the ambassador to Germany under Trump, as the interim executive director. He stated that Grenell “shares my vision for a GOLDEN AGE of American arts and culture” and would work towards eliminating any “ANTI-AMERICAN PROPAGANDA.” (This version maintains the original meaning while using more natural and conversational language.)
The Kennedy Center manages both the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera, while also organizing theatrical performances, the Kennedy Center Honors, and other events.
8 fantastic years have passed collaborating with Deb Rutter, President of Kennedy Center, Renée Fleming, fellow artistic advisor, Justin Ellis, NSO artistic administrator, and the entire NSO team. We’ve been instrumental in introducing countless new audiences to the beauty of symphonic music. However, what I’ll miss most is the extraordinary musicians of our nation’s symphony orchestra – simply the best! (Fold’s post continued.)
After Trump‘s declaration, the Kennedy Center released a statement on Friday stating that they had not received any formal messages from the White House concerning adjustments to our Board of Trustees. It is known that certain members of our board have been given dismissal notifications by the administration.
According to a report from The New York Times, all 18 board members who were appointed by President Biden, including Rubenstein, are no longer listed on the center’s official website.
