Contrary to earlier announcements made more than a year ago, Rosa Salazar, who starred in “Alita: Battle Angel”, has reportedly been removed from “Captain America: Brave New World”. This upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe production hasn’t quite met expectations, as it received a low rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have expressed dissatisfaction with the film, pointing out that it seems to be edited together from apparent reshoots, which were widely publicized and are said to have significantly changed the movie.
As a passionate cinema enthusiast, I must express my disappointment that one of the most intriguing changes made to the movie was the removal of the character played by Salazar as Diamondback from the Serpent Society in “Captain America: Brave New World.” Initially reported by ComicBookMovie, I can now confirm, after careful observation, that there’s no evidence of Salazar’s presence in the final cut of the movie. The character of Diamondback was introduced by writer Mark Gruenwald and artist Paul Neary in Captain America #310 back in October 1985 as a member of the Serpent Society. Despite rumors about other characters, Salazar had been officially confirmed to be part of the film’s cast since 2023, with set photos featuring her character.
It appears that Salazar’s character, Diamondback, played a substantial part in “Captain America: Brave New World” since she received her own McDonald’s Happy Meal toy for the film’s original merchandise tie-in, which coincided with its initial release. This tie-in was established prior to the reshoots where Giancarlo Esposito joined the cast as Seth Voelker / Sidewinder, taking over the Serpent Society leadership. However, during these reshoots in 2024, Salazar was spotted on set wearing Diamondback’s iconic pink hairstyle, suggesting that she remained part of the original version of the film. This raises several questions, such as what adjustments were made to the initial plan and why Salazar’s character, Diamondback, no longer seems to be a part of the current movie.
What Role Did Diamondback Have, and Why Was She Cut?
It’s regrettable that Rosa Salazar’s character in “Captain America: Brave New World” has been omitted from the final cut, a development that unfortunately isn’t too unexpected given her absence from any promotional materials for the movie. This makes her the second actor initially cast for the Serpent Society who didn’t make it into the film, with WWE superstar Seth Rollins being the first. It was confirmed that his role in “Brave New World” was scrapped when Giancarlo Esposito was brought in for reshoots in the summer of 2024. The elimination of these characters only fuels more speculation about what could have been in “Captain America: Brave New World.
It could be that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) intended Rachel Leighton, known as Diamondback in the comics, to have a complex yet flirtatious rivalry with Sam Wilson, the Falcon, while possibly offering him a romantic interest for the film. Her connection to a McDonald’s Happy Meal toy hints at her initial significance in the movie’s planning, which might have been reduced to emphasize Esposito’s Sidewinder. Fingers crossed that Marvel Studios will find an upcoming project for Salazar and perhaps reintroduce Diamondback in a later project. The thought of a love story between a superhero and supervillain seems like an exciting dynamic the MCU could benefit from.
