Miles Teller, who stars in Top Gun: Maverick, has clarified the speculations surrounding his role in Martin Scorsese’s postponed biblical epic. During the red carpet event of his newest film, the horror-thriller The Gorge, he was directly questioned about these rumors, which propose him as Jesus for the renowned director.
It was reported last year that Scorsese might cast Teller and Andrew Garfield for a future venture – a film adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1973 novel “A Life of Jesus.” However, at the red carpet event for “The Gorge,” Teller refuted any discussions with the renowned director about this project. When asked by Variety if he would play the biblical character on-screen, Teller replied, “No,” in a firm manner.
Even though such discussions haven’t occurred yet, it doesn’t rule out the possibility that Teller might welcome the opportunity to collaborate with the director of Taxi Driver.
friend, upon reading that, I found myself immediately reaching out to my representative, questioning if perhaps Martin Scorsese had somehow misplaced the script, or something along those lines. It seems quite challenging, portraying Jesus in a movie.
Even without direct interaction between them, Teller openly admires Scorsese and is eager to work together on a project. Recognized for films like Goodfellas, Casino, The Departed, and Killers of the Flower Moon, as well as other acclaimed works, Scorsese’s brilliance in filmmaking does not go unnoticed by Teller.
I believe that particular thing was probably just tossed around without much thought, and I can’t explain its origin or purpose. If Marty Scorsese asks an actor to do something, most likely they’d say yes and work it out later. As for that specific offer, I haven’t received a call yet.
Even though Garfield hasn’t spoken about the rumors, it is worth noting that if he is part of “A Life of Jesus,” this would be his second collaboration with Scorsese, following their 2016 project “Silence,” which was adapted from a book by Shūsaku Endō.
Martin Scorsese’s Biblical Project Stalls
Martin Scorsese’s desire to adapt “A Life of Jesus” originated from a conversation he had with Pope Francis in 2023. Currently, however, the project seems to have hit a roadblock, and Scorsese’s involvement is being redirected towards other projects. One such project is an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel “Home,” and another is “Devil in the White City.” The latter, inspired by Erik Larson’s 2003 non-fiction book “Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America,” may bring Scorsese together once again with his frequent collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio. This movie, which has been in development for over a decade, is expected to be distributed by 20th Century Studios.
Currently, viewers can catch Teller in the series “The Gorge“, premiering on Apple TV+ this Valentine’s Day. The intriguing blend of romance follows Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy as they play elite snipers stationed at opposite ends of a mysterious chasm. Additionally, we found out this week that Teller will take on the role of Italian cyclist and WWII hero Gino Bartali in an upcoming biopic.
Although it’s not yet clear if Martin Scorsese’s planned Jesus project will become reality, Robert De Niro’s comments suggest his eagerness to team up with the director again. Scorsese has mentioned he still has more films to create, so there’s a possibility we might witness a collaboration between Scorsese and De Niro in the future.
