Netflix is venturing into an exciting new phase for fans of Dungeons & Dragons, as the renowned Forgotten Realms will soon see a new series being produced by them. This announcement follows Netflix’s upcoming addition to their streaming library, the 2023 movie adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, set for release on February 26. Previous attempts to bring this franchise to television at Paramount+ didn’t come to fruition, but with Netflix now involved, there’s a strong possibility they might successfully introduce the D&D universe to our screens.
The “Dungeons & Dragons” brand has immense potential for profit, given its nearly five-decade status as one of the most renowned tabletop role-playing games. However, past attempts at live-action adaptations have fallen short, with the 2000 film, featuring Jeremy Irons, casting a shadow over future projects for quite some time. But the 2023 release, “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” has won over many fans and demonstrated that a successful project can indeed be created from this IP.
The latest development sees the new series resuming the mission to adapt Dungeons & Dragons for streaming, a task initiated by eOne (then a subsidiary of Hasbro) in 2021, where they prioritized creating a TV show based on the D&D franchise. Although it seemed like things were progressing when Paramount+ greenlit the series directly in 2023, changes in focus and priorities at the platform led to the project’s eventual shelving. eOne was later acquired by Lionsgate, and the D&D brand moved under Hasbro Entertainment. A freshly reimagined project then emerged, catching the interest of Deadpool & Wolverine director Levy and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello.
‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Could Be a Perfect ‘Stranger Things’ Replacement
The upcoming D&D project comes at a time when fantasy is once again thriving as a lucrative industry, particularly when tied to an internationally recognized intellectual property. As the pioneer of the fantasy genre, Dungeons & Dragons offers one of the most detailed and expansive universes ever developed, making it difficult to comprehend why it has taken so long for a comprehensive franchise to materialize.
It’s quite fortunate that the D&D series might find its home on Netflix, given Levy’s role in the hit Stranger Things franchise. Over the past few years, Stranger Things has introduced the realm of Dungeons & Dragons to a vast number of viewers, thanks to the game playing a significant part in the show. With Levy returning as director for some episodes of Stranger Things Season 5, it seems only fitting that he would then move on to a D&D project, making this collaboration seem almost destined.
It appears that the pieces are coming together for “Dungeons & Dragons” to potentially emerge as Netflix’s next significant fantasy production. Given the imminent conclusion of popular series like “Stranger Things,” “The Sandman,” and “The Witcher,” the iconic characters from the Forgotten Realms could step into these shoes, solidifying their role as a key component in Netflix’s future within this genre.
