Gilead has found its next star.
In the sequel series to “The Handmaid’s Tale,” titled “The Testaments,” Chase Infiniti from “Presumed Innocent” has been announced as a co-lead, reprising his role alongside returning star Ann Dowd. Infiniti shared this news on his Instagram on Thursday, expressing his excitement, saying, “Thrilled to be part of the cast of ‘The Testaments’ on Hulu!
Hulu and MGM, known for their hit series featuring Elisabeth Moss, have been actively working on the next adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s work. The sequel to her 1985 best-selling dystopian novel, titled “The Testaments“, serves as the inspiration for the popular series. When “The Testaments” was initially announced in 2019, discussions started between the streamer and studio and the series creator of “The Handmaid’s Tale“, Bruce Miller, about making this follow-up a significant addition to the successful drama that helped establish Hulu as a provider of original content.
After that point, Miller has been working on a project titled “The Testaments“, with Margaret Atwood serving as a consulting producer. Moreover, he continued to play an active role in the final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” as Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang stepped in as co-showrunners.
As the final season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” concludes June’s narrative, fans may find “The Testaments” an excellent follow-up. The show resumes many years beyond the events depicted in “The Handmaid’s Tale.
2019 saw the publication of “The Testaments”, a book that continues the story more than fifteen years after the enigmatic ending of Margaret Atwood’s original novel, “The Handmaid’s Tale”. In the final scenes, readers were left in suspense about the fate of Offred, the protagonist, as she entered a mysterious van. However, the series has since ventured beyond this initial source material and is now hurtling towards its end with the upcoming sixth and final season, set to premiere on Hulu from April 8.
Instead of being narrated from Offred’s (Moss’ character) perspective, “The Testaments” will be told through the viewpoints of three other women linked to Gilead: a young woman brought up in the repressive environment; a Canadian teenager who discovers she was actually born there; and Aunt Lydia, the antagonist of both the book and the series, portrayed by Dowd.
In 2019, Margaret Atwood threw an unexpected twist into the series I was working on with The Testaments. It seemed like she had been planning this for some time. As much as possible, I’ve been striving to ensure that The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t become all about The Testaments. Each should stand alone and when it’s complete, The Handmaid’s Tale should be a satisfying TV show you can place on your shelf next to the book, enhancing your enjoyment of it, after which you can delve into The Testaments.
He added, “Margaret’s method, which is impressive, involves shutting one and saying, ‘I don’t need to look inside that one. Instead, let’s open the next one and discover its contents. It might contain anything.’ This is a progression, but it feels like a new segment, with possibilities that are boundless.
Deadline was first to report the casting.
