If you’ve been searching for a reason to dive into one of the greatest video games ever made, look no further! The perfect moment to experience Okami has arrived.
Introduced in 2006, Okami is one of Capcom’s less widely recognized intellectual properties, but I’m happy to see more conversations about it. This game was Capcom’s response to the growing popularity of Zelda-style titles, a niche they could hold their own in the market.
Although it didn’t achieve the same level of popularity as their Resident Evil and Devil May Cry series, it still managed to foster a dedicated fanbase who appreciate Ammy’s journeys in its world inspired by Japanese mythology.
Surprisingly, I didn’t get a chance to play this game when it initially launched for PlayStation 2 in 2006. At that time, I was preoccupied with Kingdom Hearts 2 and Persona 4. However, I discovered the remastered version on my Nintendo Switch three years ago while in lockdown, and let me tell you, I regret not experiencing this Capcom gem earlier!
Currently, I find myself reflecting on my experience with Okami, marveling at its grandeur, and extending an invitation for you to delve into this game if you’re a fan of action and adventure titles. If such genres don’t appeal to you, let me share some insights as to why I believe now might be the ideal moment to explore the captivating world of Okami.
Reason #1: It Has Amaterasu
Rise.

Essentially, Amaterasu is the central figure in Okami, a reborn version of the legendary Shinto deity Amaterasu, who assumed the shape of a snowy wolf. Accompanied by Issun, her faithful travel buddy, they traverse old Japan to combat an impending ominous danger.
Reason #2: Beautiful Visuals
Okami stands out among games released during the early 2000s due to its unique presentation. Unlike other titles that were striving to surpass Metal Gear or Shadow of the Colossus with superior graphics, Okami carved its own path by utilizing a cel-shaded watercolor art style.

In 2025, the graphics didn’t bother me in the slightest. Although the mechanics and game design may seem a tad old-fashioned, the distinct visuals draw me into an intriguing, alien take on Japan that feels strangely captivating.
Reason #3: You’ll Love the Celestial Paintbrush
In Okami’s gameplay, you’ll experience a blend of action-packed combat (hack-and-slash) and problem-solving puzzles. If you’ve previously enjoyed Hideki Kamiya’s creations, such as Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, you’re familiar with the fact that it’s an interactive real-time game, heavily emphasizing combos.

In Okami, each fight is reminiscent of miniature Devil May Cry battle arenas, where Okami is confined by a magical barrier and confronted by numerous adversaries. Unlike conventional fighting games, Okami’s battles are not merely about dealing damage with button presses; the Celestial Brush significantly influences combat mechanics.
The paintbrush in this game isn’t merely decorative, and Amaterasu isn’t just a cosmic figure without purpose. With the aid of Issun, she has the power to create items like bombs by painting them onto the screen using the touch controls provided in the game. Users of Nintendo Switch can easily utilize the console’s built-in touchscreen, while PS5 users can opt for the DualSense touchpad. PC gamers, on the other hand, can take advantage of their mouse. For those who find touch controls less appealing, there’s an option to activate ‘Paintbrush Mode,’ which allows control through the analog sticks instead.

In many instances, defeating the game’s adversaries and bosses calls for using the Celestial Paintbrush to shatter their defensive postures. At times, you need to exploit the swiping features of the Celestial Brush to cut through enemies, effectively breaking their sturdy barriers. It’s incredibly gratifying when this technique proves successful.
Reason #4: It Has a Sequel Coming!
If you’ve already completed Okami, you may find delight in learning that a follow-up game is on its way! I assume you’re already aware of this exciting news. That’s why I encourage others to experience the original game, as it will serve as a great preparation for the upcoming sequel.
When Studio Clover shut its doors, all fans felt disheartened about the prospect of a new Okami game. Luckily, due to Hideki Kamiya’s determination, some remnants of Studio Clover have resurfaced and are currently busy crafting this sequel.

Despite not knowing whether the sequel will be set years later or what it may entail, considering Amaterasu’s celestial essence, there’s a possibility that she could represent another reborn form.
Although the game is still in its initial phase of creation, we can’t predict its final outcome just yet. For now, let’s appreciate the first installment of this game. If you have Game Pass, you can play it at no cost alongside other Capcom games. Essentially, there’s no reason not to experience Okami. If it doesn’t appeal to you, perhaps Ammy’s story isn’t your cup of tea.
