Contains spoilers for “Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage” Season 1, Episode 10 — “A House Divided”
In the show “A House Divided,” Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy Cooper (Emily Osment) find themselves in a challenging situation – they must mediate an argument between their mothers, Audrey (Rachel Bay Jones) and Mary (Zoe Perry). The cause of the dispute? Both women are squabbling over who should get more time with baby Cece, and each believes that the child resembles them. They accuse each other of being overly possessive; Mary, in a passive-aggressive move, secretly includes photos of herself with Cece in an album, which Audrey finds upsetting.
In various attempts to find a solution, issues between Mary and Audrey arise again. However, during a sermon, Mary criticizes Audrey, invoking God and her religion in a disrespectful manner. Previously, viewers of “Young Sheldon” applauded when Mary stood up for Mandy against Audrey. This situation highlights Mary’s increasing use of her Baptist faith as both a weapon and shield amidst life’s difficulties since the absence of George Sr. (Lance Barber).
Gradually, Mary is transforming into the strict and religious character on “The Big Bang Theory” who often unsettles Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and his friends. Her extreme conservatism can be softened by instances of anger or sadness, but fans will eventually grow to dislike this version of her. At present, she isn’t as aggressive in her faith as she will be in the next decade, but she certainly continues to cause trouble for the group.
Mary is much more strident on The Big Bang Theory
Initially, Mary wasn’t as abrasive as she later became. Throughout most of “Young Sheldon,” she was religious but open-minded, quite distinct from her character in “The Big Bang Theory.” She often didn’t conform to the church’s teachings, such as when she defied the church after Pastor Jeff criticized Georgie and Mandy for having a child out of wedlock. This led to her resigning from her job within the organization. However, George Sr.’s passing significantly altered Mary’s life. She became more devoted to scripture and God’s teachings, growing more aggressive and less tolerant in her faith. Her primary focus shifted towards saving their souls, whether positively or negatively.
Despite Georgie and Mandy arguing about whose mother is correct, they manage to keep their marriage intact amidst the dispute, a rare instance of tranquility for them. This small victory adds strength to their frequently-contested union. Interestingly, Mandy’s bond with Audrey isn’t as solid, always showing signs of wear and tear. The most heartbreaking aspect is that Georgie’s relationship with Mary seems destined to deteriorate further, a fate shared by his brother and sister.
