I Just Found Out Brie Larson Borrowed Her Stage Name From An American Girl Doll, And It’s The Most Millennial Thing I’ve Ever Heard

Many celebrities choose stage names in Hollywood, such as Natalie Portman (formerly Natalie Hershlag) and Olivia Wilde (formerly Olivia Cockburn). Stars like Brie Larson have also changed their identities for the silver screen. Interestingly, I recently learned that the actress who plays Captain Marvel actually chose her own name – it was inspired by an American Girl doll! As a millennial, this fact has me positively charmed pink!

Many of you may recall the original collection of American Girl dolls that were popular back then.

  1. Very pricey and absolutely a status symbol. (OK not Millennium Falcon Lego expensive but still.)
  2. Had awesome accessories.
  3. Were all — at the time — historical American characters.
  4. Had a whole compendium of books to match.

Among the toys that millennial kids cherished during their childhood, owning an American Girl doll was akin to striking it rich. Over time, these dolls became more diverse, encompassing various periods of history and narratives. This allowed more girls from different backgrounds to find dolls they could relate to. These dolls were highly sought after and popular. In fact, stores specializing in American Girl dolls even opened up in major cities, allowing children to host tea parties with their dolls!

1) During the ’90s, they were a significant element of growing up, and with all the nostalgia for ’90s films and culture, it’s understandable why this would be the case. Actress Brie Larson, originally named Brianne Sidonie Desaulniers, felt such a connection to Kirsten Larson that when she entered Hollywood, she adopted her name as a tribute to the American Girl doll. (However, the less exciting truth is it’s also a name tied to her grandmother.)

Previously, she had discussed this topic, but I learned about it more recently through an engaging interview on Brit.co where she confessed that she has noticed the American Girl doll Halloween costumes have been revived lately.

As a self-proclaimed cinephile, I can’t help but get giddy at the prospect of donning some fabulous adult Halloween costumes this year!

Indeed, everything aligns quite logically in this scenario. Back in the nineties, Larson initially ventured into acting as a child, which was likely a period when she might have been particularly captivated by Kirsten Larson herself. In an earlier interview on The Tonight Show, she discussed her unique last name, Desaulniers, mentioning it could be tricky to pronounce, hence her preference for something more fluid and effortless. Larson, as she shared with Glamour, was the perfect choice in this regard.

To be honest, my given name can be challenging for others to pronounce, leading to constant corrections which has become quite tiresome. Moreover, I’ve never identified with the name “Brianne,” as it was often used when someone was in trouble. Instead, I prefer another name that suits me better.

This resonates with me deeply, not just as a member of the millennial generation, but on a very personal level because the Kirsten doll I owned was from the Swedish immigrant series that lived in Minnesota during the 1850s. To be honest, I felt more connected to Samantha, but you take what you get and don’t complain. Kirsten was still quite fascinating; her hair was styled in two braided loops adorned with ribbons, and she wore a St Lucia outfit complete with an ivy crown on her head. Although her style might not have been as trendy as Felicity’s, Kirsten had plenty of spirit and charisma.

As a movie critic, I can’t help but draw a connection between Brie Larson and the doll from the Roadkill Easy Bake Oven commercials she once starred in on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. It seems plausible that she may have found some sense of identity in that character when choosing her stage name. I’m curious to learn more about the moment Brie Larson transformed into Brie Larson, but given my familiarity with the actress dates back to her role in Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, it seems this alias has been a constant part of her life for quite some time.

You wouldn’t believe how well it functions unless you heard it directly from her. If she gets credited in future Marvel films, then you’ll be in the know as well.
