‘Captain America’ Box Office: ‘Brave New World’ Opens to Bullish $100M in U.S., $192M Globally

In a refreshing turn, Captain America: Brave New World appears to be embracing a more presidential vibe, as Marvel Studios aims to revitalize the franchise by introducing a completely fresh ensemble.

To kick off the year, the initial blockbuster movie has earned approximately $100 million in its first four days during the extended Valentine’s and Presidents Day weekend in the U.S., with $88.4 million made on the three regular days. This figure surpasses previous predictions.

Globally, it’s starting off with $192.4 million after launching to $92.4 million internationally.

In an unexpected turn of events, “Brave New World” managed to achieve one of the highest domestic debuts during the holiday season and the largest opening so far this year, despite receiving criticism from critics and a mediocre response from some viewers. This is quite remarkable given that it earned a B- CinemaScore from audiences, which is the lowest grade any film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has received to date.

Of course, not everyone shares the same opinion. After all, Brave New World enjoys a satisfying 79% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

In the upcoming movie, Anthony Mackie steps into the role of Captain America, replacing Chris Evans in the part. This production, estimated at around $180 million before advertising costs, eschews science fiction elements and the concept of the multiverse. According to Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige, it can be seen as a more earthbound action film, similar to “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” from 2014, which featured Evans and introduced Mackie to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (In simpler terms, there won’t be any multiverse in this movie.)

Under the direction of Julius Onah, Brave New World features Harrison Ford as the newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who proposes to recruit Captain America for an official military role. However, prior to making a decision, Wilson becomes aware of a sinister worldwide conspiracy that leads to a confrontation with Ross when the president inexplicably metamorphoses into the Red Hulk. Danny Ramirez appears as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, joined by Liv Tyler, Tim Blake Nelson and Rosa Salazar.

The movie’s success clearly highlights the anticipation for a major motion picture. Additionally, it emphasizes the importance of catering to a culturally diverse cast, which resonated strongly with audiences, particularly children who enjoyed the film immensely.

The Presidents Day holiday falls on the same weekend that the original Deadpool, along with Marvel’s Black Panther and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, were released. In particular, these movies grossed approximately $120 million over the three-day Presidents Day weekend in 2023, following a preview period where they earned around $17.5 million.

Over the Presidents Day weekend in 2023, the original Deadpool, Black Panther, and Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania all opened, earning a total of about $120 million over the three days. Prior to this, they brought in around $17.5 million during their previews.

After experiencing some setbacks with several films, Marvel had to reevaluate its approach and future plans. However, the phenomenal success of Deadpool and Wolverine, earning over $1.3 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever in 2024 summer, has significantly improved Marvel’s position. The studio is now optimistic about Captain America, a film that encountered obstacles on its way to the big screen, but its success will ultimately depend on how well it resonates with audiences.

In North America, StudioCanal’s new addition to the cherished Paddington series ranks second in line (Columbia Pictures/Sony handles domestic distribution for the third installment).

In Peru, Paddington is announcing a projected four-day launch totaling approximately $16 million, with more than $13 million made during the first three days. This beloved film by both critics and audiences has already grossed an impressive $104 million internationally, with $19 million coming from markets distributed by Sony.

The movie, priced at $90 million, was entirely produced and funded by StudioCanal – a collaborator on Universal and Working Title’s upcoming project, “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” the much-anticipated fourth and concluding chapter in the series starring Renée Zellweger.

Bridget Jones made her way exclusively onto Universal’s streaming platform Peacock within the U.S., as a special Valentine’s Day present for current subscribers and an enticing offer to attract new ones. The film will have a theatrical debut abroad, where it has already earned a noteworthy $35.5 million in its opening weekend. Universal is overseeing the movie’s distribution in most international markets.

More to come.
