If you haven’t had a chance to watch the exciting new blend of genres, “The Gorge,” on Apple TV+ yet, beware as there are spoilers ahead. Enjoy the streaming if you have an Apple TV+ subscription!
After spending more years at TopMob than I have fingers, I rarely watch movies or TV shows without being influenced by months of promotional hype. However, with Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy’s streaming thriller titled The Gorge, I somehow avoided knowing anything about it until just before its release. This might be why it quickly became a strong contender for the most bewildering, eclectic movie release of 2025.
To me, it’s not a bad thing because I didn’t have any specific expectations that could be disappointed or exceeded. In fact, I found myself enjoying the strange, genre-bending movie even more because I had no idea what unexpected twists would come next. It seems that I have a different perspective than most of the critical reviews, but let’s move on.
As I settled into my seat for this cinematic adventure, I was initially drawn into a seemingly straightforward narrative, only for it to swiftly morph into an exhilarating rollercoaster ride of the bizarre and unpredictable. Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy gracefully navigate their roles as snipers hailing from contrasting backgrounds – the United States and Lithuania respectively – each stationed on opposite sides of a breathtaking, vibrant chasm teeming with eerie creatures.
However, director Scott Derrickson’s signature monster movie atmosphere is soon replaced by a charming romantic comedy interlude before transforming once more into an adrenaline-pumping, spectacle-filled science fiction action extravaganza, laced with tantalizing hints of governmental intrigue.
Let’s first discuss some puzzling aspects of the movie, and later we can delve into the most implausible aspect of “The Gorge,” which triggered the entire sequence of events.
Some Of The Gorge’s Wildest And Most Questionable Details
- Both Levi and Dasha seem like the same person, as they’re both record-breaking snipers who blindly parachute into unknown areas and are also quite astute at free-soloing.
- The proximity bombs on either side of the gorge are seemingly just below the metal walkway barriers, rather than much farther down, resulting in parts of the barriers being destroyed every time there’s an explosion.
- There are apparently supplies and leftover belongings in both fort-like building, but Levi barely took anything with him.
- The first two times Levi and Dasha hear and/or see the creatures, it’s seemingly because of gunshots and loud music, and yet they continue to disrupt the silence with gunshots and loud music regularly afterward.
- The colors of the gases and fumes at the bottom of the gorge change from orange to purple and beyond, without addressing it.
- Levi seems like an extremely smart and practical person, yet doesn’t suspect any secret surveillance or other nefarious issues, despite everything else being shady as shit.
- Skull spiders. I loved the spooky fuckers, don’t get me wrong, but the sheer number of them is still enough to make my entire body clench.
- The mutated creatures in the gorge have for years survived attempts to destroy them, to the point where the guard towers became the go-to option, and yet it took just two two rule-breakers from opposite sides of the world to destroy it all.
In essence, what you’re saying is that the analysis delves only superficially because much of the storyline created by screenwriter Zach Dean operates based on film logic. However, it was a point in this movie, which postulates that a tech company harbors covert mutants under surveillance, that triggered my own suspension of disbelief.
I Call B.S. On How Often Levi And Dasha Knew What The Other Was Doing
To put it plainly, I should mention upfront that my vision isn’t particularly strong, and it might be influencing my perspective on this discussion more than I’d care to admit. However, I acknowledge that both characters in question would require exceptional eyesight for their feats of marksmanship. Moreover, I don’t claim to have detailed knowledge about the limits of excellent vision, nor the size of the titular gorge or how its vapors could impact the air above it.
Despite all that was observed, I never found myself convinced that either Levi or Dasha could perceive such a multitude of subtle details occurring on the other person’s side, especially during nighttime scenes. It’s understandable that with those incredibly potent binoculars, it would be relatively simple to decipher handwritten messages and spot tears rolling down cheeks. However, it was Dasha in particular who seemed to possess an uncanny sixth sense about Levi’s actions, always seeming to predict when he would be looking.

‘Is It Possible to Eliminate This Scene?’: Initially Unenthused by the Chess Scene in ‘The Gorge’, Anya Taylor-Joy’s Opinion Eventually Changed
Although I would have gladly purchased the story if it presented Dasha as possessing precognitive abilities, be it through scientific means or magic, as this concept aligns well with the overall narrative. Regrettably, that’s not how the story unfolds. Instead, various scenes during the characters’ shared journey suggest that the binoculars are primarily used to decipher words, while they aren’t crucial for other details like facial expressions, hand gestures, and other body movements.
If the movie hadn’t used so many drone shots emphasizing the great distance between the two groups, I might not have realized how far apart they were so clearly. Moreover, the way Levi and Dasha portrayed their rifle shots suggested a tough challenge and implied that the distance was quite extensive.
In conclusion, I’m not convinced that aspect will significantly influence whether or not “The Gorge” appears in Apple TV+’s top movie list, but I believe it would have been more engaging for me if Levi’s conversation with Sigourney Weaver’s character, Bartholomew, had discussed the difficulty or ease of understanding the opposing viewpoint directly, instead of simply instructing him not to look.
