Among many delightful aspects of the Saturday Night Live reunion specials, I find one particular charm to be the A-list audience. Unlike regular episodes where the crowd is usually enthusiastic amateurs, the SNL 40 and last night’s SNL 50 featured former hosts, celebrities of great renown, and past cast members. This transformation elevates the crowd engagement segments, as demonstrated by last night’s Q&A, multiple audience shots, and my personal favorite – a hilarious duet by Jason Sudeikis and Will Forte that inadvertently involved Jenna Ortega and Kevin Costner.
It’s entirely unclear whether Ortega and Costner were in on the joke during that bit. Many viewers, including myself, were equally puzzled by it. However, watching Sudeikis and Forte, dressed as Times Square regulars – a pimp and a cartoon character – collide and maneuver Ortega and Costner, was quite an unusual spectacle. Here’s the strange scene from John Mulaney’s New York City musical sketch, check it out below:

In this brief clip, there’s an abundance of intriguing aspects worth exploring. Let me quickly touch upon a few:
1) Jenna Ortega’s response when her personal space is encroached is quite captivating. She subtly adjusts her posture, seemingly thinking she’s resolved the issue, unaware that Sudeikis was simply preparing to occupy that space, much like a game of Risk.
2) Kevin Costner nonchalantly putting on his glasses is another highlight. It exudes an air of tranquility as if he has no worries in the world. It’s as though he’s reaching for them to solve a crossword puzzle during a peaceful Sunday morning at home.
3) I find it amusing when Jason Sudeikis playfully slaps Jenna across the face with the back of his hand. It seems like he’s intentionally pushing the boundaries of the scene to the extreme, and it results in some hilarious facial expressions.
4) One aspect I enjoy about this skit is the diverse reactions from famous spectators. Julia Louis-Dreyfus appears thoroughly entertained by every moment. Chris Rock stands there with his arms crossed, resembling a skeptical ex-cast member, trying to guess where the joke is headed. Woody Harrelson and Jason Momoa show expressions of bewilderment tinged with amusement, which fits their personalities well.
You could keep watching it again and again. I’ve seen that clip approximately 10 times now, and each viewing brings something new that makes me laugh. Luckily, you could say the same thing about most of the rest of the SNL 50 show as well. This special episode was packed with legends from the world of sketch comedy and A-list celebrities, all having a fantastic time. Some of them delivered their skits flawlessly. Others stumbled over lines in a humorous fashion, while some seemed a bit uneasy sandwiched between Sudeikis and Forte who were so dedicated to their roles they hardly seemed to notice.
Saturday Night Live (SNL) has not revealed any upcoming hosts as of now, but it’s set to come back on March 1st with an ordinary episode. Hopefully, they’ll continue to surprise us with more appearances by their past stars for the remainder of the season.
