- ‘Captain America: Brave New World‘ Has Similar Political Themes as ‘The Winter Soldier’
- ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Finally Addresses the Celestial Situation
I’ve just seen “Captain America: Brave New World” in theaters, and let me tell you, it’s been quite the hit among fans! Although some critics seem divided with a 50% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, the audience’s sentiment, as reflected by the Popcornmeter at 80%, is much more indicative of its appeal.
Coming off the back of “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” series on Disney+, Sam Wilson (played brilliantly by Anthony Mackie) has now officially stepped into the role of Captain America. Alongside his buddy Joaquin Torres (portrayed by Danny Ramirez), who’s taken up the mantle of the Falcon, they find themselves smack in the middle of a rapidly unfolding global crisis.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I found myself immersed in the gripping narrative of “Captain America: Brave New World.” This captivating tale unfolds amidst the chaos following an assassination attempt on President Thaddeus Ross, a recent election winner portrayed by Harrison Ford. The proposed treaty regarding Celestial Island’s minerals was disrupted by this event, leading to widespread turmoil.
However, the plot thickens when my friend, Isaiah Bradley, is revealed as the assassin. Reminiscent of Bucky Barnes in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Isaiah was under mind control during the incident, oblivious to his actions. This chilling element lies at the heart of the film, resurrecting the intense political thriller atmosphere that “The Winter Soldier” masterfully crafted 11 years prior.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Has Similar Political Themes as ‘The Winter Soldier’
Read Our Review
The film “Captain America: Brave New World” maintains the typical elements found in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. Yet, it delves deeper into more serious political themes, much like “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Politics have always played a role in MCU films, particularly those involving the Avengers. However, the new “Captain America” movie takes these themes and makes them a prominent part of its storyline. When the president and their decisions are involved, there are bound to be political consequences, and this is clearly demonstrated in “Brave New World”. The film also exudes a political thriller atmosphere, with a puppeteer manipulating events using mind control as a tool towards a specific goal.
In much the same way that Bucky’s story unfolded 11 years ago, Isaiah appears to be a character similar to a Manchurian candidate, and Captain America must uncover the truth if he wants to avoid a catastrophic global conflict. The political themes in both films are hard to ignore, and they set this series apart from others in the MCU. In many aspects, Brave New World seems more like an adaptation of a Tom Clancy or John Grisham novel than a typical MCU film. This isn’t to say it doesn’t fit within the MCU – after all, Red Hulk does make an appearance, and there are numerous other superheroes present. However, what makes this film stand out is its more serious tone, which feels rooted in a political reality that many viewers can relate to.
In a different yet understandable phrasing: “Brave New World” is an engaging political thriller that takes place within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although it may not scale the same heights as “The Winter Soldier“, it certainly strives to match its intensity. Unlike most MCU films, the menace to the world doesn’t stem from supernatural villains like Loki (Tom Hiddleston) or Thanos (Josh Brolin). Instead, the antagonist emerges from a series of strategic political decisions made in the past and is now seeking vengeance for those choices, regardless of the consequences.
‘Captain America: Brave New World’ Finally Addresses the Celestial Situation
Since the climactic events of “Eternals” in 2021 left a celestial embedded in the Indian Ocean, unresolved, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has never delved into this situation. However, the film “Brave New World” has now tackled it head-on. Known as Celestial Island in the movie, this colossal entity significantly influences the narrative and its political thriller atmosphere. Given its strategic location and resources, the island becomes a coveted prize for global powers, sparking an international conflict that lies at the heart of the film’s unfolding crisis.
In the absence of Celestial Island, Brave New World wouldn’t retain its intriguing qualities as a political thriller, offering a thought-provoking resolution to the lingering mysteries left after the finale of Eternals. Fortunately, the way it is handled in the newest addition to the Captain America series makes the wait for those answers worthwhile. It’s plausible that such a powerful nation would attract the interest of all dominant countries in the world, each yearning to possess a piece of this island due to its valuable resources. The one who controls it will likely dictate the course of global politics.
Being a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that every Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film, whether directly or indirectly, revolves around power and control. In the captivating world of Brave New World, these themes are skillfully woven into the fabric of politics, much like how The Winter Soldier masterfully did it. Right now, you can stream the entire MCU library on Disney+, while Captain America: Brave New World is currently gracing the big screens at your local theater.
