In a twist that might even surprise James Bond himself, the formidable adversary he may now face is not a global villain but rather the intricate European legal system. A property mogul aims to seize ownership of several James Bond intellectual properties, claiming they’ve been underutilized for quite some time. This latest development is merely the tip of an iceberg, hinting at a complex struggle that has simmered behind the scenes of the 007 franchise for years. Recent reports suggest that obstacles in producing the upcoming Bond film have escalated, potentially fueling this copyright lawsuit.
What’s Going On With James Bond At Amazon?
As a cinema enthusiast, let me reminisce about 2021 – a year that saw Amazon acquire MGM, the studio that guarded the James Bond franchise rights. In the same year, the long-awaited No Time to Die, Daniel Craig’s swan song as our favorite secret agent, finally graced the screens after being held back by COVID-19 delays.
Since that time, things appear to have stalled in terms of progress. It’s been reported that Barbara Broccoli, head of EON Productions and the creative force behind the Bond films, and Amazon have encountered difficulties. The main issue seems to be a disagreement over the direction the franchise should take moving forward. Allegedly, Broccoli has expressed frustration towards Amazon executives, labeling them as “foolish” due to her doubts about their vision for the franchise’s future. Despite fans eagerly anticipating who will play the next Bond, it seems there are numerous questions that need addressing first.
Why A Businessman Is Suing Over The James Bond Copyright
More on Bond 26

According to experts, there’s a significant change coming for 007 in Bond 26 that makes me quite angry for a specific reason.
In essence, this ongoing legal battle revolves around the control of the Bond franchise, which is being questioned due to apparent internal disagreements. An Austrian property developer named Josef Kleindienst has stepped forward with a claim for ownership of the Bond copyrights, arguing that they have not been actively used in Europe and the UK for five years, as stipulated by law. This legal loophole allows the protection of a copyright to be contested when it is not utilized within the protected regions during this timeframe. The case encompasses various copyrighted elements such as the character’s name, James Bond, and the 007 alias.
As a dedicated cinema enthusiast, I wholeheartedly agree with Josef Kleindient’s sentiments expressed to The Guardian. He fears that 007 – our beloved Bond – is teetering on the brink of peril because there hasn’t been enough action. His concern is that if we don’t inject some life into this iconic character, he may cease to capture our interest and ultimately fade away. To prevent such an unfortunate demise, Kleindienst is advocating for a revitalization of the Bond franchise.
Many of us, including myself, are disheartened by how James Bond is being handled. Our aim is to preserve the classic James Bond character and create more adventures for him. In light of this, we’ve chosen to invest and back this endeavor, so that both current fans and generations to come can continue enjoying James Bond.
It appears Kleindienst believes that the character of James Bond has not been fully utilized to its potential. Additionally, there is a dispute over the trademark for using Bond in films and television. Given Eon Productions’ history with Bond and the fact that the last James Bond movie was released less than five years ago, it seems doubtful that the dispute will be resolved successfully.
Each 007 film concludes with the promise “James Bond will return.” Although it’s almost guaranteed this prediction will come to pass, the real questions lie in when this will occur and what the James Bond world might look like upon his return.
