Since its debut in 2016, the game Pokémon Go has left an enduring mark on our culture, boosting the popularity of augmented reality games and solidifying Niantic’s reputation as a well-known company.
It appears that significant adjustments may be imminent after nearly a decade. According to Bloomberg, Niantic could potentially transfer its gaming sector to Scopely, a mobile game developer owned by Saudi Arabia’s Savvy Games Group.
The anticipated value of this deal is approximately $3.5 billion, potentially resulting in a shift in ownership for one of the most celebrated augmented reality games developed so far – a game that was once under Google’s umbrella but has been an independent entity since 2015 (Niantic). Despite its initial success, Niantic has faced challenges in replicating its early triumphs.
Despite Pokémon Go maintaining its position as a leading mobile game, bringing in hundreds of millions annually, Niantic, the company behind it, has encountered difficulties replicating that level of success. Over the past few years, Niantic has faced challenges, including multiple organizational changes, staff reductions, and even the cancellation of projects such as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite in 2022.
If the transaction is successful, it will encompass not only Pokémon Go but also other mobile gaming ventures by Niantic, such as Monster Hunter Now. However, this agreement would not cover Niantic’s non-gaming technologies, specifically their geospatial mapping tools, which are crucial for developing realistic augmented reality experiences in the real world.
Reliable sources close to the matter hint that a possible announcement of a deal might occur within the following weeks. However, they emphasize that it’s not certain that an accord will be struck, as external elements could potentially influence the end result.
2023 rolled around, and I, a dedicated gamer, found myself part of an ever-growing force within the gaming universe – Savvy Games Group, a division under the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF). We’ve been making waves in this exciting industry, with plans to deepen our footprint even further.
In a major move, we swooped in and took over Scopely for a whopping $4.9 billion – talk about a game-changer! But that wasn’t all; we also announced our ambitious intent to pour a massive $37.8 billion into the gaming sector. Now, you might wonder where all this money’s going – well, around $13.3 billion is earmarked for some major acquisitions, so keep your eyes peeled for exciting updates!
The business has been vocal about its ambition to establish Saudi Arabia as a top international gaming destination by 2030, a goal it shares with Niantic and Savvy Games Group, who have previously collaborated. In August 2024, they formalized their partnership with an agreement aimed at expanding Niantic’s presence in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt.
On top of that, Pokémon Go officially launched in Saudi Arabia in November 2024.
Once the deal is completed, it will represent one of the largest purchases in mobile gaming, thereby increasing Saudi Arabia’s influence over a popular game title.
