Power Rangers Returns: Bryan Cranston and Elizabeth Banks Join Netflix Revival!

In 2017, Lionsgate put out a Power Rangers movie that blended elements from the classic teen drama film “The Breakfast Club” and our cherished childhood superhero series. The final product received both positive and negative feedback from critics, and it only moderately succeeded at the box office. This halted plans for several sequels, but since its debut, the film has developed a devoted fanbase, and now that can persist as the movie secures a new platform for streaming.

Starting March 6th, you can stream “Power Rangers” on Netflix, according to their upcoming releases. Since freshly added films often perform well, there’s hope that this classic series will find its due recognition. Given its quality, which outshines the initial box office reception, it truly deserves more accolades as it endeavored to offer something more than a standard reboot.

Five typical teenagers find themselves in an extraordinary situation when they realize that their hometown of Angel Grove, along with the entire world, is under imminent threat from extraterrestrial forces. Fate has chosen them as Earth’s saviors, and it’s up to them to prevent destruction. However, each must tackle personal challenges before uniting as a team – the Power Rangers.

Power Rangers Received Mixed Reviews Upon Release

The movie Power Rangers was met with a blend of positive and negative opinions when it first came out, scoring 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. The general sentiment among critics is that the film lacks both the playful charm of its TV version and the grand action of its superhero cinematic peers, failing to reach its full potential for some classic morphing moments. However, despite this critical response, the movie garnered an impressive “A” rating from opening day viewers as indicated by CinemaScore.

2017’s “Power Rangers” didn’t flop entirely at the box office, but considering its production cost, it should have performed a bit better. The film earned approximately $85.4 million within the U.S., and an additional $142.3 million globally, however, these returns were not sufficient to cover the estimated production budget of around $100-$105 million. Consequently, after accounting for all revenue and expenses, it was reported that Lionsgate incurred a loss of about $74 million on this project post-theatrical run.

Initially planned to spawn multiple sequels, the updated version of “Power Rangers” didn’t continue due to its underperformance at the box office. Creator Haim Saban had shared before the film’s premiere that a six-part narrative was in the works, but it never materialized, despite Lionsgate suggesting that strong merchandise sales could trigger another installment. Additionally, rumors surfaced in 2019 about a second reboot, yet these plans were abandoned in 2024 when, surprisingly, Hasbro discontinued its collaboration with Netflix.

Power Rangers hits Netflix on March 6.
